Severe weather battering Danvers area reports two women killed when a building struck by lightning collapsed. A separate Danvers incident notes a woman dying of fright. Boxford records a soldier killed instantly. Aviators at sea report narrow escapes as crops suffer losses and wires topple. street cars halted.
The Fifth Division Board at Blossom street posted the full list of eligibles for the first call to form the national army. Commissioners Burroughs Clare and Wilinsky with assistants issued three lists of those liable and sent notices for physical examinations on Friday Aug. 3.
A major blaze struck the Union Carpet Lining Company storeroom on Arsenal Street near the Watertown Arsenal just before 8 pm. Nora Larsen a 34 year old Boston woman leapt from the Colonial Line steamer Concord between Rikers and North Brothers Islands as it neared Boston. Watermen pulled her unconscious from the river and she was taken to a hospital. She faces an attempted death by own action charge with no clear motive.
Washington July 27 Senate military committee favored Senator Chamberlains resolution to empower the government to draft alien citizens of countries now at war against Germany but living in the United States. Secretary Baker said he would not recommend favorable action but would not oppose its passage.
Yesterday a fierce storm broke an early Thursday heat wave, dropping temperatures 23 degrees from 92. One death from heat prostration occurred: Frank Holland, 35, crew on the Nelly Gaskill, died at the Relief Station.
