German forces press advance in Galicia capturing multiple towns as Allied retreat widens. Intense artillery duels persist in the western theater with continued heavy fighting and strategic shifts shaping the frontline.
The policy of blood and iron will be carried out against seditionists on the eastern front and within Russia. Capital punishment, abolished with the new government, is reinstated to allow field courts-martial to execute summarily those deemed traitors in the army.
The Board of Back Bay Ward has prepared a list of 358 names with a division quota of 179. A formal examination call is expected to be issued today and each report is due within five days from the date.
Three fast motorcycles with no lights roared through darkness into the Ninth Regiment recruit company from Wakefield rifle range toward Stoneham. Nineteen soldiers were struck, two seriously. two riders were also hurt as machines traveled 35 to 50 miles per hour.

Washington report notes the Senate will vote next Wednesday on a constitutional amendment for national prohibition. By unanimous consent the body will take up Senator Sheppard's resolution on Monday and aim to dispose of it by Wednesday night in a clear prohibition issue before Congress.
The resolution calls for banning intoxicating liquors nationwide with Congress authorized to enforce. A six year deadline for state action is added. Senate near likely two thirds needed for passage with votes from Sheppard and opposition from Penrose and Underwood. Joseph W. O Connor rushed the seriously hurt to Melrose Hospital. The missing rider from the rear remains at large.
The Shipping Board rapid personnel changes include the resignation of vice-president Theo dore Brent and the swearing in of Edward N. Hurley of Chicago to replace William Denman. Tomorrow Hurley will be elected chairman and Rear Admiral Capps will become Emergency Fleet Corporation general manager after talks with Goethals.
One woman died and 15 people were hospitalized after a brutal heat wave gripped Greater Boston. Official readings show yesterday's temperatures reached or exceeded 100 degrees in several areas with high humidity and a southwest wind. Overnight, temperatures hovered near 74 degrees as relief lingered elsewhere.
A woman, Clara Heomans aged 32 of 612 Tremont street, died after collapse in a 55 Hanover street building. Heat casualties included 20 plus individuals aged 17 to 78 from Roxbury, Revere, Charlestown, Everett, South End, and Lowell, with several linked to Roxbury, the Torpedo Station in Newport, and Lowell mill work.

The Senate approved the annual rivers and harbors bill with 50 votes for and 11 against carrying 27.95 million dollars and adopted Senator Weeks' amendment to authorize negotiations for Cape Cod Canal purchase subject to later congressional approval or condemnation if needed. Senate opponents labeled the measure pork, with ten named senators voting no. The House passed the measure June 27 and it moves to conference.

Division 7 Boston board completes the master call list with 358 names and a 178 quota. If the quota is not met from the 358, more men will be drafted. The vanguard group for examination is expected to be summoned today or tomorrow.

General Edwards wired General Wood that he had orders to ship the New England troops into the new 26th division down South as soon as they are mustered. He also asked when the Charlotte North Carolina camp grounds will be ready.
Advance units of the New England force entrain ahead of a major movement to prepare camp for the division. National Guard members will be drafted by the President’s order on Aug. 5, with main troop trains to depart from six states Massachusetts New Hampshire Maine Connecticut Rhode Island Vermont. Mobilization camps sprang up quickly as units pitched tents outside armories and parks. First Department of the Northeast orders discharged married men with dependents or affidavits. Equipment shortages were minor except for the First Corps Cadets engineer regiment and parts of the Eighth. General Sweetser assured he could obtain the needed material.
The French government extended free use of the mails to American soldiers in France allowing letters and post cards home at no charge. The measure could pave the way for reciprocal arrangements with Great Britain if desired.
