A Charlestown and Everett club sparked a riot at Nahant drawing the entire local police force plus six Lynn officers. Patrolman George Cole was stabbed in the arm as guests fled Relay and Bass Point houses, evacuated by rioters.
A 200 to 300 strong mob of young men stormed the Relay House causing dancers to flee and looting nearby stores. Officers were stabbed and beaten as a crowd spilled into the bowling alley and Bass Point Hotel. Lynn police arrived to restore order, with two rioters arrested.
The Ohio Republican convention in Columbus broke up after nominating Harding as Governor. Harding, editor at Marion and former lieutenant governor, was described as everybody's second choice during the early convention clashes. He is known as an effective stump speaker.
The ticket lists candidates for governor Warren GC Harding of Marion and lieutenant governor Francis W. Treadway of Cleveland. Other posts include secretary of state Granville W Mooney of Austinburg, attorney general Grant Denman of Toledo, state treasurer Rudy A Archer of Belmont, supreme court justices William B Crew of McConnellsville and Augustus N Summers of Springfield, clerk John B McNutt of Salem, dairy and food commissioner Renick W Dunlap of Kingston, public works George H Watkins of Portsmouth, and common schools commissioner John W Zeller of Findlay.
Napoleon Rivet, Lowell murderer, awaits execution within 24 hours at Charlestown State Prison. He eats well and sleeps well in his cell shared with a former inmate, Tucker. His aged father, Philip Rivet, visited briefly, breaking down with emotion. Witnesses include the warden, a medical examiner, Associated Press reporter William Carroll Hill, Father Malley, and two other medical men.
London July 27 The King's accession declaration bill moves in amended form through the House of Commons on its second reading by 410 to 84. The measure removes the pronouncement against Roman Catholicism and replaces it with a clause declaring that the monarch is a faithful Protestant.
The Non-Conformists opposed the original anti Catholic clause in the Protestant Church declaration. The premier accepted their amendment changing the wording to I am a faithful Protestant. The bill’s second reading is anticipated after a tense day of political maneuvering and street protests near Parliament with anti Catholic placards.
Mrs. Isabelle Phelps aged 50 wife of Eugene Phelps of 12 Cottage street attempted suicide in the cellar of her Malden home by cutting her throat with a razor. She is at Malden Hospital not expected to live, after weeks of illness with no prior signs of self harm.
A blaze in the Codman garage and stables on Washington Street Dorchester killed nine horses and a pony last night. Forty one other horses were rescued through a window as doors were blocked by smoke. Damage was estimated at 5000 dollars. Victims included Helen Dare, Tommy, and Maude S, tied to local residents and events.
Men risked their lives to save the horses and four valuable automobiles in the Cadman square garage as the fire was discovered. The first minutes were the most intense due to the rescue efforts.
Patrolman James N. Nelson of East Dedham was severely bitten on the legs as he entered 23 Genesee Street to arrest Mrs. Delia Geul nonan. He battled the animal for ten minutes and finally knocked it unconscious with his club before taking the dog into custody and transporting to City Hospital for treatment.
Police recount a volatile incident in which Mrs Gelllnonan, intoxicated, threatened silence while Nelson faced repeated dog attacks. A massive bull dog leaped, biting Nelson's leg as the officer tried to intervene. The officer fought the animal, ultimately stunning it with a club and ending the danger.
