Boston and Detroit split doubleheader to end West tour
In Detroit Bennett Park hosted a two game set as Boston shaded Detroit 8 to 3 in the opener and Detroit shut out 4 to 0 in game two. Jimmy Collins led Boston with key hits while Cy Young pitched effectively for the Tigers. The Tigers and Red Sox both rotated pitchers as Donovan and Tannehill started for Boston and Young closed for Detroit. The crowd reached about 4500 as Boston left town after the series. Later in Cleveland Washington split with the Indians, winning the ninth on Anderson’s two bagger and losing the second as Bernhard shut them down. Wolfe’s fluke homer kept Washington from being shut out.
