Passengers crowd provincial steamers head list at pier
The new Calvin Austin from St John NB led arrivals with 205 aboard, followed by the Prince Arthur from Yarmouth NS with 196 and the Howard from Baltimore Norfolk with 100. Several other vessels from New York Philadelphia and Nat ports carried sizable crews. A towboat mishap near Charlestown damaged the Salmon P Chase while mud scows scraped the vessel, and local captains shuffled duties with retirements and new commands in the fleet. The steady stream of tramps contrasted with a few regular liners awaiting cargo or charter. The Amphitrite left Charlestown for Newport after yard time.
