Buccleuch Arrives With Hemp Cargo From Manila

The British ship Buccleuch, Captain Tedford, arrived from Manila with 14 018 bales of hemp in 130 days. The voyage from New York to Yokohama to Manila and back took one year five days, with 75 days spent loading and unloading. Captain Tedford, a Yarmouth Nova Scotia native, commanded his first voyage as captain and completed the Yokohama run in 147 days, faster than contemporaries. The ship sailed 33 miles in one day on the eastern route and averaged 220 miles daily between the Cape of Good Hope and the Australian coast, despite 900 miles of icebergs in the South Pacific. Bark Southard Hulbert sold to Thomas Norton & Co. for Brazilian trade. American ship Abner Coburn reported Captain Nichols died at sea. The fruit steamer Beverly, damaged, towed to Newport News for repairs.
