Hypocrisy in tariff critique sparks party clash in speech
A Massachusetts speaker accuses the Republican party of hypocrisy on tariff reform and free trade, citing 1882 1884 positions of Arthur Lodge and Wilson. He contrasts past GOP calls for broad tariff reduction with current stance, urging voters to assess promises versus actions.
Tariff debate contrasts Democratic free wool with Republican protection
The speech outlines a Democratic tariff program advocating broad reductions, highlights a reformist commission's findings on protected industries, and contrasts with a Republican platform calling for high spending and keeping tariffs on raw materials. It cites specific sectors such as wool, copper, salt, and flax to illustrate proposed relief for consumers and increased production. It also denounces the Republicans for pursuing excess taxation and protectionist measures while praising the Democratic line as in the public interest.

Excursionists would ride steamers to Point Shirley then train, or ferry to East Boston then main line, with fares possibly five cents. Trains may run like horse cars with on‑demand boarding, no intermediate stations, power from a small locomotive or dummy engine, with electric motor also discussed. No final arrangements yet.
