Pension circular taints Grand Army appeals in New Hampshire
Senator Blair heard a protest against an attorney H D Phillips who circulates pleas to Grand Army adjutants offering a 50 50 fee split for pension case referrals under the new law. Post officers forwarded the matter to Washington, denouncing the method as a pension swindle while noting the Marmion register bill advances.

Options and futures bill eyed by House committee
The piece outlines that a House vote on a bill taxing options and futures will occur early next week. It notes opposition from New York exchanges and farmers, but suggests likely failure in the House due to cross-state and urban opposition and questions about the measure’s efficacy for agriculturists. It also covers Secretary Windom’s bond purchase announcements and Mr Candler’s comments on the World’s Fair progress in Chicago.

McKinley Tariff Display Beyond Foreign Impact
Mr Candler believes tariff actions will not alter foreign display for Chicago buyers. Foreign makers may lack incentive to ship similar goods here, yet true novelty and artistic pieces from abroad will dominate. Memorials of Thomas Hood and Dundee connections recounted
Miss Isabella Hood of Dundee, a distant Hood relative, provided light on poet Thomas Hood’s early Dundee links. She recalled his boyhood visits with his aunt in Nethergate, to Patrick Gardiner in Overgate, and a later 1843 trip with his son. He was described as vivacious and energetic during those visits.

Market notes show varied activity across stocks and commodities
Trading mixed as Lacka wanna breaks to 147 percent while few hands hold it, Bay State Gas shines, and coppers slide. Insiders in American Gas Investment Company hint at a new deal including Bay State Gas, Kearsarge praised, and Osceola splits a dividend guess. Sugar dull, Northern Pacific preferred picked up, Oregon Transcontinental buyers active, bonds boosted by government purchases, and Boston breweries lift output. Clearing rates ease, calls dip, and a 4 percent bank rate foreseen. Oil remains quiet, grains rally on Europe, crop signals, and shorts covering in Chicago and New York.
