A cloudburst flooded the Superba No. 2 mine at Evans Station near Uniontown Pennsylvania. Thirteen men were drowned about 4000 feet from the mine mouth while 37 escaped after a harrowing ordeal. Most victims were married with large families.
Officials report at least one more victim unknown as water-filled mine tunnels slow rescue. Dozens of families lose breadwinners with about 30 children affected. Survivors describe waist to neck deep water and timbers driven by the surge. Rescue pumps and efforts will take days to reach victims as widespread flood disrupts rail and trolley lines.
In the American League Cleveland beat Boston 11 to 6 while New York won 4 to 3 over Chicago. St Louis at Philadelphia and Detroit at Washington were rained out. In the National League Pend York defeated Cincinnati 8 to 7 in 10 innings. Chicago beat Brooklyn 5 to 1. St Louis won 5 to 4 at Philadelphia. Boston vs Pittsburg postponed by rain.
The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company raises wages for female workers and reduces their hours. Hours will not exceed eight, and split shifts will total no more than seven hours.
The plan requires more workers and raises annual payroll for female staff. Day shift pay stays level while afternoon and split shifts gain one dollar weekly and night shift two dollars weekly. Effective Aug 4 with completion by Sept 15, about 2000 employees affected, adding 400 jobs and $150,000 more yearly.
Lieutenant Thomas F. Goode Jr. is promoted to captain and placed in command at the Back Bay station becoming the department's youngest captain. Sergeant Murray Munroe is promoted to lieutenant and remains at East Dedham Street station. Patrolman William W. Livingstone is promoted to sergeant and assigned to the Broadway station. Four lieutenants are transferred including James E. Sargent to Brighton. Two new lieutenants join Back Bay tonight: James J. Watkins and James F. Hickey.
Attorney William R. Scharton accused Ferdinand B. Almy executor of the Russell estate of masterminding a conspiracy to keep the real Daniel Blake Russell from obtaining his property. He asserted William C. Russell is a nonentity and Almy has full control, a claim to be proven in court.
The charges were made during an argument with Attorney Robert N. Nason, counsel for the estate, while Mr. Almy was on the stand.
London July 25 The Daily Telegraph reports Augustine Birrell may receive a peerage and be replaced as Chief Secretary for Ireland by Right Hon H L Samuel the Postmaster General.
New Bedford July 24 The Industrial Workers of the World have changed their minds again about the textile strike. Grover Perry local organizer issued a statement midnight declaring the strike off for the organization he represents. The move follows a secret ballot and shows a shift after yesterday's decision to continue the strike.
James Dillon, driver of the combination chemical and hose auto in Quincy, steered his heavy machine into a telephone pole to avert a collision with a horse drawn vehicle behind him. The pole broke, wires fell, and Dillon was shaken up as the auto suffered damage. The incident occurred while ascending Nelson street as the power gave out and brakes failed.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals exposed a pig named Sadie in Dorchester's exclusive district. Agent Langley reports the animal has stayed in Thomas F. Kearney’s stable for a month and has drawn complaints as residents call its presence a nuisance and a disgrace.
Advices from Honolulu report the sale of Christmas Island, about 100 miles south of Honolulu, reputed original of Robert Louis Stevenson. The island, valuable as a copra producer, was transferred from the Grieg family to an unnamed buyer after negotiation by Father Rougier.
Pelletier denounces extreme complaints that label simple larceny as robbery and call for harsh sentences. He vows to protect the public from courts issuing severe penalties for alleged strike-related crimes.
In New York on July 24 fear of East Side gangsters hampered District Attorney Whitman as he sought to identify those who killed the gambler. Barber John the Barber Reisler recanted his earlier sighting of Bridgie Webber at the scene and was later arrested on perjury charges.
The coroner's hearing this afternoon examined Bridgie Webber and Sam Paul charged with complicity in Rosenthal's murder. Prosecutors say the murder gang met at Webber's gambling house near Forty third Street and Broadway.

Governor Foss asked Chief Justice Aiken to hasten trials as union and city officials met with Boston Elevated officials. District Attorney Pelletier denounced lower court sentences while noting the strikes impact. Union leaders will present their ultimatum today with no agreement yet reached.
All parties agreed to keep secret the terms for the workers' return until the Elevated Company reached a decision. Mayor Fitzgerald closed the morning conference by declaring that the discussions would remain confidential until action was taken.
