Telegram received by Mayor Fitzgerald expresses gratitude to Boston for a 5000 dollar relief contribution for Campbellton fire victims. It notes use of Federal Trust Company and promises public acknowledgment later per Campbellton mayor.
The Post reports a downpour soaking Campbellton’s canvas tents and worsening misery as food arrives. Wind and rain leave women and children drenched around camp fires on Patterson Hill. Doctors visit tents to assess conditions while many women struggle with despair and cold.
The New Haven road announced the Commonwealth Pier in South Boston will serve as a dock for a steamship line between Boston and New York through the Cape Cod canal. Construction of the canal will take two and a half years, with authorities expecting significant water transportation changes once completed.
The New England Navigation Company plans to resume Old Colony Massachusetts and Bunker Hill steamers once the canal between Massachusetts Bay and Long Island Sound is ready. Vice President Byrnes says the canal will greatly expand operations and the line may run through the canal when finished. President Mellen seeks to secure the Commonwealth pier to ensure early access, with the three screw propellers currently used only for emergencies. The Civil Service Commission informed Mayor Fitzgerald that Dennis D. Driscoll’s appointment as deputy penal commissioner violates civil service rules. Acting on an AG opinion, the position now falls under civil service, and Driscoll ceases to serve for the moment. Fitzgerald plans to seek the commission’s eligibles list.
The mayor, citing lack of a list, will ask the commission to appoint Driscoll as deputy penal commissioner pending the commission obtaining a list of eligibles.
Eleven enlisted men were killed and several injured when a breech-block of a 12 inch gun exploded at Fort Monroe while attempting to stop an imaginary fleet from passing the fort toward Washington. A 200 strong mob confronts an arriving train at Windsor while another strike breaker conductor is briefly jailed for brandishing a revolver. Freight moves intensify as strike breakers shift cars between Central Vermont and Boston & Maine, with crews quartered in a junction building.
Elliott Mississippi July 21 Five colored men were killed and two wounded when a deputy sheriff and two citizens attempting to arrest seven men on a minor charge faced a weaponed mob at Henry Beck's farm near Elliott. The deputy fired two revolvers, killing five attackers and wounding others as they advanced with pitchforks.
In St Louis on July 21 Arthy Raymond of the New York Nationals clashed with manager McGraw. McGraw ordered removal of Raymonds uniform after a displeasing appearance. Raymond refused, leading to a heated mix up. Raymond later left the clubhouse after removing his uniform.
