In San Diego harbor two boilers on the gunboat Bennington exploded killing Lieutenant Perry and 38 men, wounding 80, with 21 missing and possibly dead. The ship suffered a large stern breach and was beached to avert sinking.
General Wilmont Blackmar’s body arrives at Huntington Avenue station in Boston en route to Waterman’s and Cedar Grove Cemetery. A large escort from the Grand Army of the Republic and various officers will accompany the funeral through the Second Unitarian Church, with ceremonies led by Rev. E. A. Horton. Pallbearers include Lt Gov Curtis Guild Jr and Mayor P A Collins, among others. page 12 continues.
John Schidlofski showed a worn face as General Whitney confronted him with the truth of his alleged murder of his wife. He wept and begged for a razor and spoke of possible self harm while insisting he would face trial in Poland rather than the United States.
The Navy Department reports the boiler explosion on the gunboat Bennington in San Diego at 10 55 AM with many killed or wounded. Commander Lucien Young provides initial details and says engineers oversee boiler safety with no other unusual findings after March repairs in May. Washington July 21 The Navy Department received a telegram from Commander Young of the Bennington detailing a morning accident at 10 15. He reports the top of the lower furnace of boiler B exploded causing it to push boiler A aft and explode.
President is notified that Commander Lucien Young reports a boiler explosion at 10 15 a m aboard the Bennington. He says nearly everybody is killed or wounded and orders Mare Island officers to render assistance. George Darling Acting Secretary of Navy confirms.
Commander Young reports the vessel Bennington was badly damaged and beached after an explosion. The ship flooded, magazines flooded, and crew were taken to hospitals with doctors aiding. Seven bodies were found behind boilers as bulkheads were cut away. The ship is a total wreck and requires assistance. relatives must be notified.

Washington reports the Bennington disaster claims two New England victims. Boatswain's Mate Second Class Joseph Cox Newcomb of 94 Water Street Quincy is identified alongside his aunt Mrs E Barnicoat. Oiler Michael George Quinn of 216 Pleasant Street Winthrop is listed with sister Kate Quinn.
Report by Commander Young lists sailors including J Newcombe and B A Hughes among those aboard or on shore. Several believed blown overboard and drowned with seven unidentified on shore and seven on board.
