British government defeated in Commons

London July 2 The government lost in the House of Commons by three votes on a motion to reduce the Irish land commission. Prime Minister Balfour refused to comment on possible resignations, saying the issue could be settled in time and that he would consult allies before deciding on another vote. The session adjourned to tomorrow after wrangling over adjournment.

Fire girl leaps to street after clothing catches fire

Miss Sadie Levine, 13, of 59 Corning Street South End, jumped from a third story window after her candle set a chair ablaze. She suffered severe burns and a knee cap fracture, and was taken to City Hospital. Nearby resident Lewis Adler helped extinguish the flames.

Indictment of Schidlofski in Colorado Murder Case

John Schidlofski, jailed in La Junta Colorado on a murder charge, was indicted by the Middlesex county grand jury after a two hour session. Det Rhoades of the State police was notified by Governor Douglas and will escort the prisoner back, with travel expected to begin Thursday and return by July 24.

Massachusetts Detective Joins La Junta Visit

State Detective J. H. Whitney of Massachusetts arrived in La Junta and avoided reporters by securing a hotel room. He said he would stay four to five days until his partner Frederick A. Rhoades reached Boston, aiming to avoid trouble with Schidlofski when they depart.

Carlton Is Again Indicted In New York

Fred E. Carlton, the man known as E. J. De Martinez and accused wife poisoner, was indicted by the New York county grand jury for grand larceny linked to Charles A. Goldsmith of Stamford Conn. Goldsmith says Carlton drugged and robbed him of 1500 dollars in a Park Row hotel five years ago. Brooklyn authorities yesterday exhumed Carlton’s second wife’s body to test for poison in her stomach and internal organs.

Lineman Killed by Live Wire in North Andover
