In the house of commons last night in committee on the land bill the emigration clause was effectively abandoned as government limits expenditure to 200000 pounds over three years. The Gen. Butler syndicate offered 2,347,000 for A. & W. Sprague property, about 30 percent of the debt, but creditors committee rejected it and no agreement was reached. An auction sale was planned for tomorrow unless an injunction is obtained.
In Harrisburg Pennsylvania authorities report the head of a colored woman believed to be Mary Andrews was found floating in the canal near High Spire. A search is underway as investigators consider the possibility that only part of the remains were burned and the restcast into the canal.
Samuel B. Wickard once Cumberland Maryland assistant postmaster is charged with embezzling 9550 dollars in government funds and fleeing to Canada. He later reportedly worked as a clerk in the Rock Island Railroad company office in Chicago at the time of his arrest.
