Thousands of telegraph operators quit work nationwide on July 19, leaving 146 Western Union staff at New York in operation and drawing broad public support. The Brotherhood of Telegraphers demands include an eight hour day, Sunday rest, 15 percent salary raises, and wage scales for Wheatstone operators. The walkout spans 200 cities with about 7,000 men and 1,000 women involved, while sympathies flood in from labor groups including Knights of Labor and Amalgamated Iron and Steel Workers.
Eight important items demand labor standards for linemen and operators. Eight hours a day, Sunday pay for Sunday work, minimum salaries of 65 dollars for linemen and 50 dollars for operators, and monthly increases plus restricted duties to core work. A special meeting of the American Hibernian society of South Boston is set for Friday evening to act on the report from the revision of the constitution committee. Capt Webb will perform diving feats at the Pemberton this afternoon and evening. The East Boston Longshoremen Benevolent society plans its annual picnic at Centennial Grove Essex on August 27 with athletic events and games. Members of the Young Men's Christian Union and friends are invited to an excursion Saturday to the Botanic Gardens Cambridge near Harvard University.
Bethlehem Pa July 19 the steel mill and two furnaces of the Bethlehem company reopened in a limited way this morning with plans to increase the shift daily until full operation. About 100 men sworn for special police duty guard the works and protect workers as visitors are barred. No clash has occurred with the amalgamated workers though tensions are high.
The conference committee on the legislature and senatorial apportionment bill failed to reach an agreement. Attempts to appoint other committees paused with no action. The Senate adjourned until Monday evening after adopting a resolution to adjourn on July 24, leaving little prospect for agreement on apportionment during the extra session.
