Minerva and Gossoon Rivalry in Burgess Yachts Review
In Forest and Stream, Mr Stevens compares Firecutter Minerva with Burgess Gossoon, noting Gossoon mirrors Minerva in rig and design while adopting British sail plans. The piece questions Burgess’s shift from American racing ideals and whether Gossoon can surpass Minerva in a changing transatlantic yacht scene.
Minerva and the Evolution of American Yachting at Sea
The article evaluates Minerva designed in 1888 comparing her construction and deck to sisters like Mariaquita and Chispa. It questions whether future boats by Mr. Fife could surpass Gossoon and notes Minerva’s role as a landmark, suggesting continued improvements will influence the entire fleet and establish a second era in American yachting before noting Puritan as a reference point.
