A fierce blaze gutted the three upper stories of the Western Union building at Broadway and Dey Street in New York. About 30 operators evacuated as flames raced from the battery room on the sixth floor. The fire caused heavy damage to the operating rooms and Associated Press offices, with losses estimated around 1.6 million dollars and no insurance. Firefighters rescued several restaurant staff on the eighth floor and worked to restore service quickly.

President Harrison backs tighter laws to halt mail delivery for lotteries including Louisiana schemes. A Senate committee is drafting a bill to make all lottery mail non mailable and to extend laws to agents and agencies. The aim is to relieve the Postmaster General and curb registered and money order letters for lottery operators. The bill is expected in a week or ten days.
The House committee on invalid pensions authorized a favorable report on a bill to grant a $2000 per year pension to the widow of General Fremont.
The Senate confirmed nominations including James Russell Soley for Assistant Secretary of the Navy in Massachusetts Al lured B Nettleton for Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in Minnesota Oliver I Spaulding for Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in Michigan J Lewis Stackpole in Massachusetts and Ferdinand II Shurtleff in Oregon as general appraisers of merchandise all in one action.
