Fallen idol Haskell shocks temperance politics in Massachusetts
Prohibitionists once hailed Colonel E. H. Haskell as a steady force in the amendment drive but his recent letter is seen as a setback. He argues Massachusetts voters are not ready to back a distinctively prohibition policy, prompting disappointment among temperance Republicans and disgust among third party proponents. At Prohibitory HQ, radicals and conservatives voiced surprise and questioned his motives, with leaders like Henry Faxon weighing the implications for Brackett Crapo and Capen in the governor race.
