New York reports John H Loehr of Rutland Vermont vanished while en route to Washington with $1000 cash. Sister in Washington awaiting his arrival says he left New York a week ago and failed to reach Philadelphia or Washington. Traces end after the Philadelphia train. Also noted are Pedder transferring all his property to Arnold Constable Co and Rhinelander indicted for felonious assault on Lawyer Drake.
The semi annual gathering at the Flume House Franconia Notch drew a large turnout with spouses. President Wm Heywood gave an address of welcome, Daniel Barnard delivered the semi annual address, ex Judge E D Rand offered a biographical sketch of James I Swann, and John Mitchell spoke on Trial by Jury. Ex Gov Bell participated, and a letter from Poland Vermont was read. Next meeting planned for December 30.
Ex Senator Chaffee testified before Referee Cole that he lent Morris against Grant & Ward bonds in October 1833 and later West Virginia Central and Pittsburg railroad bonds. He says he never recovered the bonds and drew about 35000 dollars from the firm before its failure, believing it would yield profits. He describes assurances of need for funds and potential handsome profits from the loans.
In Newburyport Massachusetts on July 18 the advisory board of the Lasters union and E P Dodge settled the dispute. The men will take an ocean excursion Saturday and return to work Monday. Dodge will operate a Portsmouth branch producing 500 pairs daily without affecting the local shop, and goods will be shipped back to Newburyport for assembly.
In Newport yesterday on the U S S Portsmouth an officer, showing rifles to his wife, loaded a ball cartridge by mistake and fired. Marine David Nash was shot in the leg with a bullet passing through a two inch plank. An artery was severed and Nash bled for 24 hours before being taken to Newport hospital in a dangerous condition. Cause attributed to gross carelessness.
Rev. Andrew J. Chambers of Bethel African Methodist church was arrested at the request of D. Appleton & Co. of New York after obtaining Appleton's Encyclopedia volumes and failing to pay or return them. Chambers, a prominent figure in New Haven, leads a colored democratic club.
Governor Cleland with his staff arrived at the state camp at 12 40 pm was greeted by a 21 gun salute. He was escorted to Gen Wykes quarters and met crowds from Peekskill Newburgh and Poughkeepsie. At 5 pm he reviewed the second provisional regiment and departed for Albany on the 7 o clock train.
ANOTHER BANKING HOUSE CLOSED. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., July 18 The banking house of A. and J. S. Harrison did not open its doors this morning. Upon the petition of Alfred Harrison, the senior partner, the court appointed John Clay Pool receiver, who at once took charge of the bank. No statement of its affairs is obtainable at present. The bank had about 400 depositors, some for considerable sums. The city has $60,000 on deposit there.
Henry Bloom of Baltimore and Ohio express was arrested in Pittsburgh on a charge of buying a stolen package containing $10,000 sent from Baltimore to Cumberland. Bloom took the money home and offered to split with his bondsmen. authorities nabbed him as he prepared to flee.
John Connors, accused of killing New York Supervisor Philip Casey during a quarrel incident four years ago, has been captured in Kansas City Missouri. He will be brought back to New York to answer to a first degree murder charge after evading arrest since the tragedy.
In Raleigh on July 18 a well at the Duke and Sons factory in Durham caved in trapping seven workers. Three were rescued, one gravely injured, and four bodies remained in the shaft as rescuers continued attempts to reach them. A trapped man cried for help before sinking deeper.
At West Point yesterday Sam Gibson a Black man jailed for criminally assaulting his daughter fought off a mob of colored men who broke into the jail to lynch him. He stabbed six attackers, and was then shot dead by one assailant in the incident reported from Atlanta.
customs authorities seize ten printing presses from a New York firm now in use in Montreal claiming under valuation. total undervaluation alleged at about 30 percent or three tens of thousands dollars of the presses’ value.
Middlesex Vermont July 18 Daniel Chase 73 was struck by an engine today breaking one arm two ribs and displacing a shoulder. He saw the train and stepped from the track but not clear. His condition is critical.
CuIcAaGco reports Harmon Spruance & Co., a long established board of trade house, suspended operations today with estimated liabilities around $100,000. The collapse stems from losses in grain speculation affecting their finances.
In Cincinnati on July 18 the United States court appoints George Hafer as receiver for the northern division of the Toledo Cincinnati and St Louis railway.
Rev. C B Crane D D pastor of the First Baptist church has been dangerously ill but is steadily improving. Commander W S Schley, famed rescuer of Lieut Greely, lived in Boston for three years and served as district lighthouse inspector.

Burning rags in Keenan and French morocco shop on Rutherford Avenue Charlestown triggered box 465 alarm at 3 07 Friday morning. Minor rubbish fire on West Broadway caused no damage. Medford alarm 5255 reported a dwelling fire linked to the heir of H N Peak Jr on Everett Street with $100 damage. Telegraph briefs note two ice houses and a scow blaze in Toledo causing fatalities and $10000 loss, and a Danford Johnson shop fire in Oxford with $5100 loss.
The Hartford City Guard Company F of Hartford Conn. received formal thanks from Edward H Goff of Boston for the courtesies shown during their July 3 1854 visit while en route to the White Mountains. The appreciation letter dated July 15 1884 records the unanimous passage of the resolution at a July 14 1884 meeting.
The Park Theatre and International Hotel Property recently conveyed to Lotta is pledged by mortgages totaling 273000 to Franklin Savings Bank Carolyn Brewer Lotta Crabtree and Edmund C Stanton trustee in that order. The deed to Lotta has not been recorded and the consideration remains unknown. It is likely she will receive the property upon assuming the mortgages.
