Third day of the offensive yields small gains with heavy losses as forces press toward Epernay and attempt to evacuate the cathedral city. The progress is slow with the enemy offering limited resistance but costly advances for the attackers.
General Gouraud and French forces in France repel attackers amid heavy fighting. French divisions suffer small losses while repelling the Crown Prince’s advance in Champagne. Associated Press dispatch from July 17 notes Gouraud’s fame from Dardanelles and his role in stopping the German offensive. An unrelated advertisement for Cosmopolitan Trust Company appears in the same notice.
German forces push north of the Marne toward Monteuil la Fosse but are checked by a French counter attack. Allied lines east of Rheims remain firm as the third day of the German offensive yields no material gains, with local attacks continuing along a 65 mile front. The report notes strong French and American command in the sector and praises Allied strategy.
Yesterday's American games showed Boston dominating St. Louis 7 0 and 4 0 in two games with rain halting play. Washington edged Cleveland 5 4 while Chicago beat Philadelphia 2 1 in 21 innings. National results included St. Louis 4 Boston 3 and Pittsburg 5 Brooklyn 4. Eastern games Hartford 2 Worcester 1 Providence 5 Springfield 3.
Forecast for southern New England calls for showers Thursday then clearing with Friday fair weather. Northern New England experiences partly cloudy Thursday with showers in central and eastern Maine. Light to moderate northwest winds become variable Friday.
