At a New York directors meeting, Charles S. Mellen formally resigns from the helm of the New Haven Railroad and all its subsidiaries, ending a controversial tenure marked by expansion and battles with lawmakers.
In sight of about 300 onlookers at Lake View today, Guy A. Coleman aged 32 from Everett tried to save his sweetheart Marie Turner aged 26 also of Everett after she toppled from a canoe. Both drowned before rescuers reached them.
A man and woman from Everett, Coleman and Miss Turner, drowned while swimming near the Lake View pavilion after a fall overboard in eel grass. Rescue attempts by 20 swimmers failed. Coleman’s body was recovered but Miss Turner’s body remained missing as darkness halted searches.
Charles B. Plitt Jr former press agent for Police Lieutenant Charles Becker submits a five page confession to District Attorney Whitman. The document reportedly links graft to police headquarters and names an inspector civilian attaches and minor officials. It also references Becker’s alleged involvement in graft while Becker awaits execution at Sing Sing for the Rosenthal murder.
Hyde Park strikers and international union officials denounced Assistant Secretary of Labor Louis F Post after his submission of a settlement proposal to end the Hyde Park plant strike. They called the offer an unconditional surrender and warned that a settlement remains elusive despite government efforts.
