Compensation Bill Saved from Senate Defeat
The Saunders-Parks compensation bill barely escaped defeat in the Senate as the Ways and Means recommendation to refer it to the next General Court failed 16 to 17. Senator Evans moved to reconsider, with Doyle proposing that any insurer may cover employers under the plan. The roll call shows 16 votes for next General Court and 17 for immediate action, plus paired senators for both positions. Debate continued with promises of further action on reconsideration and on the insurance amendment. A separate measure to raise judges’ salaries advanced under suspension, and a Prison Commissioners’ report resolve sought guidance on prison labor and administration following Governor Foss’s request to abolish the Prison Commission and prison labor as it stands.
