Debates over auctioning Boston liquor licenses
Boston police commissioners consider auctioning new liquor licenses to curb favoritism amid protests by dealers and a city solicitor who argues discretion remains lawful. Officials note the plan would apply only to new licenses with bids on the license premium, while old holders avoid renewed bidding. General Martin backs the scheme as a potential end to favoritism, despite concerns about syndicates and wealthier bidders.
