In Richmond July 16 the Republican state convention adopted resolutions of sympathy for Gen. Grant and proceeded to nominate John S Wise for governor and Frank S Blair for attorney general. Blair withdrew, Wise’s nomination became unanimous amid enthusiasm. H Clinton Wood of Scott named lieutenant governor and Frank S Blair of Wythe attorney general by acclamation as the convention adjourned at 3:20 AM.
From New York state reports Gen. Grant slept eight hours after retiring last evening and woke with a full steady pulse of 72. He ate normally, dressed by midmorning, and spent an hour on the piazza. He told Dr. Douglas he was improving and Dr. Shrady noted the weakness was subjective, not affecting the pulse, which remained strong and regular.
Gustave DeWolf the pretended German count accused of forgery had his extradition examination postponed. He has previously claimed American ties and was connected to the American exchange, with introductions to high society in the United States. He is said to be related to M. Wolfe of the Paris Figaro and to a German baron, a confidant of Prince Bismarck. In Boston he reportedly gained entry into good society.

The Philadelphia grand jury returned three true bills against J. F. Cottringer former treasurer of the Central Transportation Company. One charges embezzlement of 147 500 dollars and the others accuse him of forging the company stock and uttering and publishing the same.

At the regular meeting of the executive council Dr Samuel A Green was nominated and confirmed as a member of the board of health lunacy and charity in place of Dr Walcott. Gas commissioners were confirmed while police commissioners were laid over. The nomination of Dr William B Burge as medical examiner of Norfolk county was withdrawn. The council will meet again Thursday at 11 A M. Dr Frank L Newton of Provincetown was nominated a medical examiner for Barnstable county. The Illustrated Press company is incorporated in Boston with 5000 capital to publish etc. Marcellus Coggan is president Andrew J Freeman treasurer. The Pelham Social club of Boston formed for a reading room and social meetings Fred A Locke president Frank M Wing treasurer.
A blaze at the Post building in Washington on July 16 destroyed editorial rooms and damaged the business offices of the Washington Daily Post, National Republican, Washington Critic, and Sunday Gazette housed there. The fire damaged presses, equipment, and plates, with total losses estimated at about 150000, much of which is insured. The Evening Star offered use of its office as crews fought the flames and the cause is believed to be in the electric light plant engine room.
President Gardner opens the cotton convention at Greenbriar White Sulphur Springs. Officers elected for two years include T L Airey president Jerome Hill vice president C D Miller secretary and eight directors from New Orleans St Louis Savannah Mobile Norfolk Galveston Houston Montgomery and Montgomery. A committee report urges Congress to make common carriers liable for agents acts on bills of lading. Savannah votes against the measure as the exchange adopts a resolution for stopping the coinage of the silver dollar.
