Families on the top floor of 259 Bradway fled smoke but were unharmed. The Associated Press reports Reginald Miner aged 20 and his 16 year old brother Claude of Dorchester Massachusetts drowned when their landing punt overturned in heavy seas near Barton Nova Scotia. Companion Kenneth Perry swam ashore but Reginald returned to aid Claude and both disappeared before help arrived. Their father is identified as Dr. Miner though no Dorchester doctor with those sons in Nova Scotia was found.
Miss Virginia Marshall Beck, Cambridge musician and great granddaughter of Chief Justice John Marshall, elopes with Lawrence M. Burford of Virginia coal fortune. The couple, last seen at Greenbriar, West Virginia, fled after a motor ride on Monday afternoon.
Miss Beck abandoned a music career and a signed contract to teach in an Alabama girls technical school to elope with Burford to Washington. A telegram to her parents in Cambridge confirms the wedding took place there and the couple are en route to Pinehurst for their honeymoon. The bride is 21 and the groom under 23, with he a University of Virginia graduate.
The Massachusetts members of the United Irish League of America national executive committee leave Boston’s South Station on the 1 o'clock train for New York to attend a Knickerbocker Hotel meeting tomorrow at 2 PM. An 8 PM informal gathering in Boston to plan Thursday’s session is set, with delegates from across the United States and Canada expected. Michael J. Ryan, Philadelphia city solicitor, will preside. Listed attendees include T B Fitzpatrick, Michael J. Jordan, Michael Maynes, James E. Cotter, Augustine J. Daly of Cambridge, Denis O Reilly, Edward J. Gallagher of Lowell, P J Duane of Waltham, Edward J. Fitzgerald of Clinton, and James T. O Reilly of Lawrence.
Celia Coleman, a maid in the Carman home, told the Mineola grand jury she heard the shot from the kitchen and saw Mrs Carman rush in after the murder, challenging Carman’s alibi and supporting the prosecution’s theory that Mrs Florence Carman orchestrated the killing. The maid previously fled the Carman house two weeks earlier. Burns detectives have kept Carman in custody.
The maid, once seen as the defense bulwark, recalls and relates new details to the grand jury. She had forgotten these points at the coroner's inquest and now becomes the district attorney's strongest witness.
Ernest Leighton Carr, Boston business figure and Melrose resident, died at 17 Orient avenue. He was 40, survived by wife Lillian, children Dorothy Marjorie John Franklin, sisters Georgiana Grace, brother Ashton, all of Melrose. He served with Old Colony Trust Company and United Electric Securities, chaired church and hospital committees.
