In Atlanta on July 14 a bold attempt to rob the Richmond and Danville pay car occurred around 4 am. Paymaster A S Groser awoke as the car sped 40 mph on a grade then halted and he confronted a gunman who fled toward Belt Junction. Although the safe held about 30 000 it was not opened. Three men were seen nearby and one was later arrested. railroad workers were linked to the plan.
Reports from Galveston state the government exempts the Vera Cruz Harbor Company from a subsidy decree. Edward W. Jackson is named general manager of the Central road, with planned personnel changes. Ceremonies begin at noon with a military Mexican band accompanying the sixty-fifth regiment.
The sixth annual convention of the American Association of Photographers began in Buffalo at the drill hall of the sixty fifth regiment and will run through Saturday. J Landy of Cincinnati is president. A large turnout is expected with delegates visiting Niagara Falls next Thursday. An extensive exhibition features work and material from Germany England and major cities in the United States and Canada.
In Ottawa the House of Commons debated the fishery question with Mr. Weldon accusing the government of neglect and delay after the Washington treaty expired. Sir John A Macdonald rejected the charge, saying reciprocity was not essential to Canadian prosperity and criticizing bringing the topic up now.
New York July 14 All litigations arising from the seizure of the American Rapid and Bankers and Merchants telegraph wires by Western Union were before Judge Donohue in the supreme court today but they were all postponed for a week. The adjournment allows Judge Chipman to rule on actions taken under his order on the motion of Ol. Ingersoll counsel for the bondholders group.
In Asheville North Carolina seven prisoners escaped last night by assaulting the jailer and forcing a hole through a wall. The fire bell rang and the Asheville light infantry was deployed. About fifty riders are pursuing the fugitives through the mountains. two are murder convicts and the rest homicide cases.
A Boston train fatally struck a man on the Lowell line near the Concord river bridge. The unidentified male, about 50, tall with gray hair and a long beard, wore a straw hat, blue checked shirt, checked vest, gray coat and blue overalls. Two cords were found around his neck. the body was taken to J. W. Brooks's undertaking room for identification.
In St Louis on Monday James Pryor was killed in a duel with Joseph Holt. Pryor took no effective shot while Holt’s first bullet pierced Pryor’s pistol hand. Pryor’s lungs and liver were hit by a later bullet and exited near the left nipple. A severed femoral artery bullet struck Pryor’s pelvis and thigh.
United States District Attorney Dorsheimer has bought the New York Star for an incorporated company. The paper will publish morning issues at 2 cents per copy and is expected to lean administration. The sale price is about 80,000 dollars with a similar mortgage balance.
In St Paul on July 14 the remaining four victims Coykendall and wife Harvey Rand and Robert Hussey were recovered using dynamite at the Minnetonka disaster site. The bodies were brought to Minneapolis and placed in the care of friends.
The body of Frank J. White, who drowned July 2 near Dunkirk with Prof. Bruton, was found floating near Lewiston Ontario this morning. Despite bruising from the fall and rapids, the corpse was readily identified.

Springfield mass July 14 Thomas Mcc Ardle 45 of Ware died after taking a medicine prescribed by a Holyoke doctor following an injury lifting a cask of lime. Medical Examiner Miner handles the medicine and the body. Mrs Johanna O Connell known as the berry woman was found insensible under her bed and died before a doctor could be called. She was found drunk earlier in a lot and carried home by constables. Marks of violence on her throat and bruises on her body prompt investigation by authorities.
In Louisville Albert Ross shot his wife after two weeks of marriage then killed himself in Jeffersonville Indiana. Jealousy is cited as the motive. In Halifax Edward Withers a longtime Halifax customs clerk killed his 18 year old daughter at their Green Pool road home then shot himself. both died.
Yacht Yan kee Maid sails westward from New Bedford with party guests from New York and San Francisco. Yacht Sadie from Yale Yacht Club, commanded by ex Commodore Benjamin Anthony, arrived from Marion and plans to sail Saturday with New Bedford club on their annual cruise. Charles Gillespie of Boston jailed six months in the house of correction for assaulting a Grinnell Mill officer. Robert W. Ritter held in 500 dollars for the superior court for altering a bank book figures.
Denison Texas July 14 an enormous manganese discovery was made about 15 miles east of Denison in Grayson county uncovering two veins one 18 inches thick the other four feet with rich crystallized manganite ore more valuable than black oxide. Discovered by William Hocking a California miner with 30 years of experience a company formed to develop the veins at once.
In Atlanta Mrs Susie Williams locked her three children in while she worked in a field. Returning, she found the house burned with the children’s charred remains. A Gwinnett County case killed two children. In six months Georgia saw about 40 children die in similar fires.
Springfield publishers G F Merriam & Co confirm President Porter leads Webster's revisions. They state standard dictionaries require perpetual editing to stay current, with no general revision planned for several years.

A ranchman Malone reports an Indian raid last night on several ranches about 40 miles above Eagle Pass on the Rio Grande. An officer from Ft. Clark was sent to investigate as cavalry is abroad in Indian territory. Locals doubt Indians were near, and believe the slain Mexicans were killed by Mexicans across the river.
AvuGUUSTA Maine July 14 It seems a reported death of a bub Bean in a Forks fight between Frenchmen and river drivers was unfounded. An affray occurred between Jonathan Bean and Baker a Frenchman. Jonathan’s son Manny fired a gun wounding Baker though not fatally. The Bean family were arrested and bonded for trial next term.
The second annual convention of the Newsdealers and Stationers National association opened in Philadelphia with about 50 delegates from Pennsylvania New York Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut Maryland Ohio Illinois Michigan Missouri and Kansas. The group opposes the American News company, accusing it of monopoly and forcing dealers to pay exorbitant prices.

In Marion Indiana last Saturday a colored man Wallace allegedly assaulted the 14 year old daughter of Vinson. The girl died soon after. A mob gathered intending lynching. Sheriff Holman and a guard fired after warning, killing James Keily and wounding several others. Leaders planned to resume tonight.

An autopsy in Foxboro Massachusetts on July 14 showed Mrs William Leonard died from paris green poison with a large amount found in her stomach conducted by Medical Examiner Holmes.

Philadelphia cranberry bogs and timber fires in south Jersey partially extinguished by rain. about 4000 acres burned in Burlington and Camden counties. Cornwall’s Bird Coleman furnace in Lebanon Valley damaged by fire to several thousand dollars.
In superior criminal court Judge Rockwell placed on file without costs liquor cases against John Glennon under the 1885 chapter 359. The action follows testimony by law and order league agents Giquel and Snow from trials before Judge Aldrich. Each case will be disposed of on its own facts with an affidavit required. about 40 similar actions are anticipated.
