Reading, Pa July 13 considerable excitement followed news from South Mountain three miles away that a mine of mica had been found on the Joel Trexter tract. A 30 foot shaft is sunk and rich mica worth $3 to $9 a pound was struck.
Schenectady July 13 A letter from Rev Joseph T Duryea to Judge Landon acting president of Union college fuels confidence he will accept the presidency Judge Landon says positively that Duryea will accept A formal acceptance is expected soon.
Pittsfield Mass July 13 There have been no revelations of importance in the Dunbar waste case. Several witnesses have been examined and there have been the usual sensational stories, but the mystery remains unsolved to the public as it was last week.
Havana dispatch reports Gusman Barnueyo, a leading bandit in the Mataveno area, surrendering at Coton. Authorities indicate the surrender marks a significant shift in the crackdown on banditry in the region.
A string of short items reports Congressman Ely visiting Salem at the invitation of Mr. Albert A. May, Senator Miller journeying along Alaska’s coast, Col. E W Rollins en route to Denver, and various other notes on public figures, rail travel, and notable residents. Comptroller rules a $50 compound interest treasury note dated July 2, 1864 is genuine though dated in error. Issued under the June 30, 1864 act, it conforms to law and remains redeemable after three years. About $15 million in such notes were issued, with around $10 million outstanding.

In Titusville a cloud burst near Oil Creek caused homes to lift from foundations and bridges to collapse, though no fatalities reported.
At a New York maritime exchange meeting, several commercial bodies sent in views on subsidies to revive American shipping. The New York board of trade supported subsidies. Charleston opposed them in any form. Others urged varied plans including direct builder bounties, foreign trade vessel purchases, ocean mail carriage by American ships, a permanent commerce bureau, apprentice system, 25 iron war steamers, and duty-free shipbuilding materials.

Trustees of Cornell University elected Prof Charles Kendall Adams of Michigan University as President White's successor after a three hour meeting in the Cornell library. New York alumni proposed delaying action and backed Gen Walker while letters from Noah Porter and President Barnard supported Walker. Adams was chosen 12 to 15.

Deputy Sheriff Keefe attached Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show for 26000 in Norwalk this afternoon. A 10000 claim covers damages from breaking up Dr Carver’s show and 16000 covers the alleged malicious arrest of Dr Carver at Willimantic. The Cody party posted bonds and remains free for tomorrow’s engagement. Cody likely faces multiple subsequent actions aimed at forcing disbandment.
In New York on July 13 Judge Donohue granted an order requiring Farmers Loan and Trust to show cause tomorrow why it should not be removed from trusteeship of the $10,000,000 mortgage on the Bankers and Merchants Telegraph Company after bondholders opposed to the sale sought relief.
On a farm between Westerly and Stonington James M. Clarke struck Samuel McDonald with a pitchfork during hay loading. The blow broke the implement and McDonald was left unconscious. a possible fatal injury. Clarke is held in $1000 bond by Stonington justice awaiting the result.
Sixty people in Momence Illinois have been poisoned by dried beef from diseased cattle. Mrs Shronts, wife of a local physician, died today and many others are in a dying condition. Sickness includes colic cramps inflammation of the bowels and vomiting. A dog fed the meat also died.
New Haven Connecticut police commissioners break four month deadlock and elect Charles F Bailman a Democrat as chief of police. The partisan fight is described as one of the hardest in municipal government history.
Worcester Mass July 13 A four oared gig and crew have been secured for the referee in the Brown Bowdoin race set for Thursday afternoon. The crew drew for positions today with Brown selecting the same lineup as in the July 4 race. The race will start at 4 30 p m local time.
New York reports the steamer Lessing from Hamburg passed the English cutter Genesta on July 11 in lat 40.45 by long 59.10 under full sail. Both vessels reported all well and Genesta is expected to arrive around Thursday.
Fong Ah You was arrested in Montreal on July 13 for the murder of Sing Lee in Rome N Y. A dagger seen in Fong Ah Yon's possession is similar to the weapon used in the killing.
Barkley and Co., prominent Baltimore coffee dealers, have failed for a claim of 130000 dollars. The announcement notes financial trouble affecting creditors and market standings in the local commerce scene.

Meriden Connecticut July 13. Carpenter Bros of New York run a large quarry north of the city employing 300 Poles Americans and Italians who had been earning 31 10 per day. They struck for 150 per day and were refused. Italians started to work but 250 strikers arrived with clubs and stones and drove them off. Quarries patrolled by special officers from Meriden and owners arrived. They warned 500 Hungarians would be brought from New York unless workers resume. Strikers feared more trouble if outside help comes. Dynamite stored at the quarries will be guarded until peace is restored.

Nathaniel Preston residence burglary reported with jewelry and $320 stolen. The Strafford County and Fellowship Relief Association met with 1098 members as of Jan 1 and 1075 as of July 1. 17 deaths in six months.
The body of Howson cooper, a colored man, hanged at Towson early today remained suspended as a jury of inquest was summoned. The verdict declared death by hanging at unknown hands. Many women visited the jail to view the body, with no arrests or identifications yet made.
An evening paper reports Noah Porter president of Yale College is supervising Webster's dictionary revision for Merriam Co. In New Haven a building near the college was leased for the work, but those involved will not confirm or deny the rumor.

Samuel C Selden aged 37 son of Col Joseph Selden of Norwich and longtime internal revenue collector for the district was found dead in his bed at the City hotel in Hartford Connecticut on July 13 authorities reported no immediate cause.
