Split in Republican ranks over cotton tariff schedule

Washington July 13 A real split arose in Republican Senate ranks over the administration tariff bill during consideration of the cotton schedule. Ten committee amendments proposing higher rates on yarns sliver and roving were defeated. Lenroot led the opposition with 12 Republicans voting against the measures on the initial roll call 22 to 24. Democrats largely voted against the proposed increases. The debate touched on potential cuts for lower grade cotton cloth and the schedule’s future handling next week. Senator Lenroot argued against higher yarn and cloth rates while Smoot backed them for industry protection. Democratic critics called the rates indefensible.
