Weather toll rises as heat waves claim three lives while storms bring brief relief. Lightning strikes and related fires damage several buildings, with two more deaths reported on the same day. Authorities urge precautions during extreme heat and storm activity.
Boston announces the 1917 Elks convention will be held in the week of July 9 with formal opening on July 10. The update came at the closing session of the Grand Lodge convention in Baltimore.
The Elks oppose elk tooth emblems to curb slaughter and back a congressional bill for wildlife protection. A three member committee will meet with Congress on the issue. Boston lodge leader E C Carr led a sweltering parade highlighting flags and a Columbia float with Miriam Doherty as Columbia and James E Knealand as Uncle Sam.
James Middleton aged 35 of Church street Canton collapsed from heat while crossing a field beside the Neponset River near the Norwood line. His body was found by local boys as medical aid arrived.
The Weather Bureau reports a hurricane of great proportions moving northwest from Georgetown South Carolina. Winds are increasing in velocity as warnings go out nationwide. The system developed off the South Atlantic coast and moved inland in South Carolina, with fears of considerable damage due to its unusual severity.
Storms knocked down telegraph lines between Boston and New York delaying news from the South and West. Post correspondents along the Mexican border and other points faced substantial delays due to the outage.

A 14 year old boy, unnamed, saved a girl about his age from drowning near the Cottage Hill raft off Shore Drive opposite Faun Bar Avenue. Spectators cheered as the rescue ended with the girl pulled to safety and revived.
A girl swam alone near Winthrop Shore Drive and Cottage Hill and cried out as she moved toward a raft. A boy on the raft jumped in to assist, and both disappeared beneath the surface. The boy resurfaced after freeing his arms and brought the unconscious girl to the beach.
Salem opens the grand jury inquiry into the Haverhill riots of April 3 4, examining 19 of 79 summoned witnesses including two clergymen a dentist police officers reporters and other citizens. They heard about disturbances following Thomas E Leyden of Somerville attempting an anti Catholic lecture at Haverhill City Hall.
Mayor Albert L. Bartlett and the entire Haverhill city government are under summons to appear as Louis S. Cox of Lawrence Essex County District Attorney and his assistant William H. McSweeney of Salem lead an investigation into rioting and seek to assign responsibility. More citizens were named in the inquiry.
In El Paso Texas on July 13 1918 Father Michael J O Connor the Boston born chaplain of the Ninth Massachusetts Regiment was taken to Catholic Hospital after a day at Camp Cotton and Fort Bliss hospital with ptomaine poisoning. He had felt unwell with a headache earlier that morning and his condition worsened prompting his admission.
El Paso Texas July 13 In a bid to be fully ready for night attack commanders of the Eighth and Ninth Regiments ordered late night false alarms. The first alarm occurred just before 11 o clock as Colonel Graves of the Eighth Regiment routed his men from sleep and prepared to resist a stealthy enemy.
Seven minutes elapsed from signal to lines forming as two companies moved in response. Officers warned of a mock alarm, but most men, kept unaware, retired calmly after taps an hour earlier. Men quickly dressed and armed, with some units ready in three to four minutes. A few soldiers were delayed by missing shoes.
London dispatch notes the fiercest fighting on the Russian front as General Brussiloff drives a sustained attack against German lines. Austro German forces halt Russian advance at Stokhod momentarily while both sides rush troops and artillery toward the key strategic town of Kovel.
A despatch from Petrograd notes the southwest campaign hinges on the Kovel area with heavy fighting along the Lutsk breach near the Stokhod river. Russians claim 2000 prisoners while Austrians admit penetrations at von Bothmer's front but report counter-attacks restored the line.
Three year old John Grillo son of Mr and Mrs Matthew Grillo of 103 Pleasant Watertown was struck by a stone truck operated by Albert K Work of Arsenal street Watertown as he crossed the gutter in front of his home He was decapitated Work was arrested on a charge of manslaughter and to be arraigned in Waltham District Court.
Thomas Rohleston of Quincy Lumber Co died at Quincey City Hospital after being buried under boards at New York Hartford freight yards. A second worker, unnamed, also injured. Police cannot locate victim’s address or relatives. Another man, John Connolly of Charlestown, died after being struck by a timber at Mt Washington Ave bridge while unloading.
Report notes growing shark presence along New England waters as prey is scarce. Fishermen and officials warn bathers to stay cautious with several nearshore sightings and warnings issued for beaches during peak season.
A monster shark eleven feet long and weighing about 300 pounds was killed near Matawan Creek New Jersey. Its stomach contained part of a human body and the fish is believed to be the same one that yesterday attacked the creek and killed two people according to a weather bureau observer.
