Personalities Dine In Wild House Debate And Senate Fortifications
Washington July 11 The House wasted much of the afternoon on a personal wrangle between Republican partisans and Greenbacker Weaver of Iowa as Phelps sought a 40 percent duty on flax and linen. Weaver read an interview about the Chicago nomination and Iowa’s farmers, while Henderson affirmed Iowa would vote Republican. Mills curbed the clash to ten minutes and Breckinridge steered back to business. The Senate debated fortifications and seacoast defenses with Plumb proposing a July 25 postponement as wartime naval questions dominated the discussion before adjourning at 5:30.
