Seven Master Lawson Launches as World's Largest Schooner
The launch of the Thomas W. Lawson at Fore River in Quincy drew crowds from shore and countryside on Lawson day. The seven master schooner slid into the bay at 2:46 pm amid cheers and a champagne christening by Miss Helen Watson. Guests attended from Boston, Weymouth, and beyond, with a holiday mood in the shipyard and dockside areas. A runaway carriage incident caused minor injuries and a horse swim before being saved. The event noted that despite Lawson’s size she trails a German five master Preussen in gross tonnage.
