Fishermen Abandon Our Policy Amid Britain’s Fishery Treaty
The Secretary of State is blamed for ignoring American rights in a treaty seen as surrendering fishing grounds near Canadian shores. The speaker argues the 1818 legacy and state claims to shared ocean fisheries were neglected, condemning the treaty as weakening U.S. bargaining and harming American vessels in British harbors. The letter singles out Cleveland and suggests ongoing missteps will inflame disputes and injure national dignity.
