Fight for Roosters in Waltham Court

Eminent counsel argued in a Watertown court to save 135 gamecocks seized during a Decoration Day raid at Frank F Coolidge estate where a cock fight was in progress. Defending the birds were George Mayberry former Waltham mayor and Judge Abbott. Opposing them were Michael J Sughrue for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the government.

Chicago July 8 A Taylorville lawyer John E Hogan says the first test of Illinois new woman suffrage law will occur next Tuesday at Mt Auburn Christian county in a special election to choose a successor to the late Mayor D P Windsor who was shot by editor F P Slater.

Mrs. Aaron C. Rawles of 16 Broadway Somerville received a handbag mailed to 176 Broadway containing no missing items from the bag when lost ten years ago. She last saw the bag with a gold watch and chain visiting cards and 87 cents. The return prompted police to locate the missing bag file.

Suffragists Begin Washington Pilgrimage With Petition Drive

Six Boston suffragists started a three week journey from Copley square to Washington to present Congress with a national amendment petition. They will tour towns from Beverly to Amesbury and Salisbury Beach, circulating petitions at each stop. Led by Mrs Inez Haynes Gilmore and Mrs Maud Wood Park, the group includes Margaret Foley Florence Luscomb Caroline Reilly and Margaret Taylor with Will Irwin noting the cause has broad arguments.

Army Man in Dive to Death

Lt. Loren H. Call of the U.S. Army Air Corps was killed when his aero plane collapsed north of Texas City after taking off from the mobilization camp. Spectators say he fought to regain control, then leaped from the rail and plunged to the ground. His injuries were severe, with bones driven through the soles of his feet.

Trial reveals pressure from film industry trust over advertising and licensing

Edmund Stryckman testifies he was told by Edison Company to avoid ads from a moving picture operator. Bates of Roxbury says he was blocked from using his own films in Boston theaters without licensing. Bogers of Hagerstown says the trust demanded licensing before supplying licensed films and stopping unlicensed ones. Judge Ray rules Louis M. Swaab need not answer a price for his film exchange question.

Curtis to Practice Law in Boston After Leaving Treasury

James F. Curtis Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of the customs division will resign Aug 1 and return to Boston to practice law. A Republican holdover from the Taft administration Curtis helped reorganize the customs service and uncover frauds at New York and other ports. He stayed on to oversee reforms and the administrative aspects of the current tariff bill.

Typographical Union Leader Nominated for State Labor Commissioner

Governor Sulzer sent the Senate the confirmation of James M. Lynch of Syracuse, president of the International Typographical Union, for State labor commissioner after three failed attempts to appoint John Mitchell of Mount Vernon. Mitchell was rejected twice by the Senate in the regular legislative session.

Bonfire Burns Boy. Mother Saves Child from Flames

Daniel Connor, four, of 110 Whitman Street Malden, fell into a bonfire while playing roughly with flames. His mother beat out the fire with bare hands, saving him though he suffered burns to his legs arms and body. He is expected to recover.
