In a tight AL race, the Red Sox and Indians meet in a double header at Sox Park as Yankees loom nearby. The outcome could shuffle standings among the three clubs and set the pace for the pennant chase.

In Omaha on July 7 the Western League directors abruptly ended the season during today’s games. Club presidents attended and the vote was unanimous, dissolving professional baseball in the league for this year.
St Louis bunched hits off Johnson to beat Washington 2 0 for the second straight win. Sotheron allowed three singles and faced little danger. In the ninth Austin tripled and stole home as St Louis rapped eight hits and took the lead.
A soldier writes from the front in 1918 about serving as a regular noncommissioned officer, a Bowie aircraft downed with Germans perishing, and his concern over baseball's decline. He urges eligible men to enlist, sends regards to Arthur Irwin, invites Ed to Columbus, and notes missing a Florida trip while hoping for health for Ed and Mrs. Reulbach.
At a Lexington Golf Club executive meeting tomorrow evening the board will consider buying town land to double the course size from nine to eighteen holes. Work on the new layout would likely be delayed until after the war.

St Paul defeated Milwaukee 4 to 3 in the first game and 8 to 2 in the second. Louisville won 12 to 7 over Indianapolis in the first, with Indianapolis taking the second 6 to 1.

In St Louis July 7 Brooklyn and St Louis split a doubleheader. St Louis won game one 2 1 breaking a 2 2 tie in the eighth on Fisher s double and a misplayed grounder by Daubert. Brooklyn won game two 2 1 in 10 innings with Johnston Olson and Daubert delivering the decisive hits.
New Haven reports the Colonials defeated the world champion White Sox 4 to 3 in a fast paced game. The win marks a close contest with late drama and solid pitching from both sides.
Ernie Shore, former Red Sox pitcher now at the ensign school in Wakefield, may gain periodic leave to pitch for Boston under the same rules as Shawkey and Faber. If feasible, his return could boost the Red Sox pennant chances, though readiness may delay debuts against the Indians this week.

Yu Chin bought a bed with a hidden lever that folds into a bureau style unit. He was trapped as the bed snapped shut and wrapped him in bedding, nearly suffocating and injuring his ankles. He survived and planned to sleep on the floor.
A service flag honoring 65 Boston Caledonian Club members was presented by Mrs. Thomas Be on behalf of the ladies' auxiliary to W. A. Riggs, club chief, at Caledonian Grove Roxbury yesterday. A flagpole rose on the knoll as Chief Riggs and former chiefs raised the American flag with the service flag beneath.
In a Sunday double header at Braves Field 14 000 fans watched as Bumkin Island with Lefty Durning on the mound defeated the United States Marine Guards of the Boston navy yard 5 to 3. Durning used pickoff moves to thwart runners and secure the win amid rain and delays.
Jimmie Hickman, in 1A draft class, plans to enlist following his father's telegram. He departs the Robins to join the service, likely at Brooklyn Navy Yard or Norfolk Virginia. Until a replacement is found, Jack Coombs will man the outfield. Colonel Ebbets searches for two top minor league outfielders.
The Dundee Britt boxing match is off after Dundee breaks a bone in his hand in Cleveland Saturday. He will be out at least six weeks. The Armory A. A. matchmaker seeks a replacement for Frankie Britt Tuesday, otherwise an all star card will be arranged.

Binghamton swept Jersey City 8 3 in game one and 9 3 in game two while Baltimore beat Newark 6 2 in game one and won 7 1 in game two. Syracuse edged Toronto 1 0.
In Newport Rhode Island on July 7 the Second Naval District team defeated the Cleveland American League club 6 to 2. Walter Rehg hit a home run with a man on base that produced the winning runs, backed by outfielders Rehg Kelly and Powell, former Boston Nationals. The Navy side built a 3 to 0 lead after three frames, then held Cleveland to two runs as Schultz and Murphy worked the batteries against Enzmann and Thomas.
President J Walter Morris of the Texas League announced after noon that today’s games concluded the 1918 season, ending play in Fort Worth.
