Boston area weather ahead shows showers on Wednesday with cooler temperatures, followed by fair conditions Thursday. National forecast for Washington notes New England showers Wednesday, cooler conditions except in eastern Maine, then fair Thursday with fresh west winds.
Jacob Sleeper former charge d affaires of the American legation at Caracas reaches New York aboard the Saratoga from Havana. He will report to the State Department on Venezuela negotiations and visit Washington to discuss returning relations amid unsettled prospects of war. Lorenzo Ruggles accompanies him. Venezuela’s Veloz Goitiocca remains in Washington.
Hot Springs July 7 The Republican national committee executive session will nominate Frank H Hitchcock as chairman and Illinois Rep McKinley as treasurer. Key supporters Hemenway Watson Burke Burke and McKinley back Hitchcock with no objections. Taft spent the day in talks with Burke Hemenway Watson Kellogg and others before leaving with Kellogg as a storm rose.
At Denver the Democratic National Convention opened with 10,000 supporters cheering William J Bryan. Theodore A Bell presided and delivered a long keynote attacking Republicans while praising Bryan. Controversies over credentials and Cleveland memorial resolutions dominated the session, ending with adjournment until tomorrow. In Cincinnati, Fred Singleton of Newport collapsed and died after police notified him of Edwin Evans’s arrest for his father’s murder, a brutal beating linked to a possible robbery motive.
Resolutions introduced by I J Dunn of Omaha at the national convention honor Grover Cleveland as a three time Democratic candidate and reflect no anti Bryan sentiment. The delegates declare Cleveland one of the strongest and ablest figures known to the party and recognize his contributions. Continued on page SFirst Column.
Edwin H. Evans known as Walter West appeared before Judge Parmenter and was remanded until July 14 for extradition papers from Ohio. He remains in the Charles Street jail.
A small gasoline launch raced from Boston Light to Dorchester bridge with Bernard Doherty a dying sailor from the Satellite aboard. Doherty was severely scalded by a burst steam pipe in the fire room and fell unconscious. The launch arrived at South Boston where an ambulance rushed him to Relief Hospital in critical condition.
Martin Brommitt, 30, a seaman, burst into the Seamans' Friend Society quarters at 287 Hanover Street and brandished a 38 caliber revolver demanding to be shot or he would shoot himself. Attendant Mrs. Sadie Fink fled in horror. Brommitt escaped before police arrived as a general alert went out.
Taylor team wins 8 to 6 over Cleveland in a hard fought contest while Boston Nationals defeat St. Louis 4 to 1 on timely hitting. Olympic jump events show American edge against continental rivals as Worcester and Lynn split a doubleheader. Brighton Beach stake events are canceled and a famed Grand Prix goes to a German driver.
Weather reports say Boston ranked the hottest city with 94 degrees at the Post Office thermometer and 104 degrees near Milk Street. Residents endured a scorching day amid chatter of sunstroke while some doubted the readings.
Frigid 56 degree start in Denver contrasts with July 7 heat in 1883 record 96. No city fatalities from heat but many prostrations reported. Somerville man died by his own action and a prison inmate attempted suicide. Laborers across Boston area faced heat while navy yard shops halted work.
A long list of residents across Boston and suburbs suffer heat related collapses and injuries. Victims include Dorothy Murphy in Oneida Street who attempted suicide, Patrick Kilroy in Roxbury, John Boman after an electric car accident, Annie Monson in Roxbury fracturing her skull, and many others treated at City, Relief, Carney or Cambridge Relief hospitals.
