Harry Fuchs 21 fires at Herman Gakes 25 known as Kid McDonald at Washington and Beech streets after long feud. He then shoots himself in the abdomen with two superficial wounds, both incidents occurring at 8 40 p m.
President Taft speaks at Fort Ticonderoga marking the 300th anniversary of the Lake Champlain discovery. He urges reflecting on past nations to temper modern achievements and notes the event as the day's main feature amid observances continued on page 2.
Rev. Joseph F. Gillis of St Marys Cathedral narrowly escaped an early morning assassination attempt in Burlington. Miss Beatrice Thompson 40 of Loomis street was arrested after firing a revolver at the priest whose umbrella stopped the bullet. Police report a fanatical aversion to Catholicism and note she previously charged priests and nuns in a unfounded letter to the mayor. The priest, about 40 and highly respected, was unaware of her motives or any threat prior to the incident.
Robert D. Evans prominent financier and Taft associate died in the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital at 10 30 last night. His family and lawyer were at his bedside as doctors said no recovery was possible. He announced his will had been drawn and his estate settled before dismissal of his lawyer.
Police delayed patrols from the Brookline wagon sent to a burglary scene at Brighton Howe Dyeing and Cleansing Company. A man with a light was spotted, but when reserves arrived no burglar remained. Behind the store officers found hundreds in laces and wearing apparel packed for theft. a Panama hat was left behind.
Washington reports the noted astronomer Professor Simon Newcomb is critically ill at his home. At 74 his condition remains grave and unchanged late tonight, with grave fears for his recovery due to age.
John Taylor a 52 year old Gloucester fisherman fell from the Estelle Nunan near Commercial wharf and was rescued by Patrolman Sitter of Station 1 after a difficult effort. Taylor was taken to the Relief Hospital for treatment.
The Red Sox win two games from Washington with pitcher Pape making his debut and delivering a whitewash in the second game. Athletics win again over the Highlanders, closing the gap on Detroit. Cy Young shuts out Cleveland to blank the Tigers. White Sox beat Browns. Brooklyn downed Boston Nationals in a close contest. Pittsburgh and Chicago win over Cincinnati and St Louis, respectively, while Philadelphia defeats the Giants. Rowers discuss Charles conditions.
Chicago reports quote Thomas Taggart denying acquaintance with Ella Gingles and saying he never saw or heard of her. The trial includes Gingles recounting a demanding visit to Miss Barrette at the Wellington Hotel and a reference to Taggart as proprietor of French Lick Springs.
Atlanta July 6 United States Senator U S Clay was unanimously re elected by the Georgia Legislature. The report notes the swift confirmation and reflects a political tone typical of the era with emphasis on loyalty and continued leadership.
Katherine Murphy aged 7 lived at 986 Harrison avenue. She fell four stories from a housetop on Hunneman street while helping to raise a kite. She died en route to the hospital after suffering multiple injuries and a skyrocket fragment in her throat. Her father John F Murphy helped rescue her and remove the stick. mother was away when the tragedy occurred.
In Amesbury, 8 year old Ellen Coffin was shot in the head by 11 year old George E Lucy who had taken a rifle from his father. He claimed he did not intend to hurt her and the child is feared dying after police detainment tonight.
Accompanied by several young companions, the Coffin girl visiting the Lucy home was shot in the head when George Lucy, nearby, fired a rifle and ordered her away. The wounded girl, daughter of Thomas F. Coffin, faces possible fatal complications. The shooter, Orrin J. Lucy’s son, was captured after hiding and will face arraignment the next morning. police filed no charges due to youth.
St John New Brunswick July 6 Judgment for 400 given today by Judge Cassels Exchequer Court in favor of John J Gleason a letter carrier of Watertown Massachusetts who sued King Edward for 5000 damages. Gleason was injured by a valise falling from a rack in a passenger car of the Intercolonial railroad property of the government.
John Britt, 40, of 3 Riversile street Roxbury fell about 60 feet from a sixth floor room at the John Hancock building near Franklin and Devonshire streets. He died shortly after at the Relief Hospital as pedestrians rushed to help.
Gloucester October 6. Robert Sargent of this city lies dying at the Gilbert Hospital from injuries after being dragged three miles while hung by his ankles from a buggy harness. He and a companion hired a turnout to West Gloucester, but when the companion took a train, Sargent returned alone and was pulled by the runaway horse after slipping at Fernwood water trough three miles from town.
