Philadelphia reports Mrs. Margaret Bateman aged 64 deserts her traveling clerk husband Paul Bateman and runs off with Paul Pfeiffer 40 years her junior. The couple, both German born, lived apart while Bateman sent remittances to fund dress and household, but Mrs. Bateman kept Pfeiffer at home and later left with him to a suburban hotel.
The steamer Twilight, capt Daggett, of the Boston and Hingham line, left Nantasket beach Sunday with 700 to 800 people aboard. It ran onto mud near Sagamore Hill as the tide fell, delaying its return to Rowe's wharf. Passengers waited, some slept in chairs, others rode rowboats to shore before Boston travel resumed. Officials warned the Twilight would not reach Boston before 3 AM Monday.

Pittsburg July 5 The Bell Telephone Company versus Western Pennsylvania Telephone Company patent infringement case will be heard in the United States circuit court tomorrow. Working models of all telephones ever built are displayed in the courtroom. Defendants contend two models antedate the Bell instrument. Noted patent attorneys from New York Boston and New Orleans and others have arrived to participate.
The experimental train left Hunter's Point at dawn and covered 94 1 2 miles to Greenpoint in 1 hour 43 minutes, averaging about a mile per minute. Newspapers were then loaded onto the steamer Thomas R. Scott to Newport Rhode Island. The service will operate every Sunday.

Springfield Mass July 5 Reverend Joseph K Mason long serving pastor of St Pauls Universalist church resigns to accept a call to the Church of Our Saviour in Fifty seventh street New York City. He improved parish finances and is among the citys longest tenured Protestant pastors.
Fifty members of the Society of the Cincinnati New Jersey branch met Saturday at the University hotel in Princeton. Old officers were re elected and new members admitted. Among those welcomed were former Governor Horatio Seymour of New York and General David Hunter, with several descendants of the original members noted.
Thomas E. Flynn of the Call editorial staff won the Pacific coast single scull championship race open to all comers at William Gurney. The two mile course included a turn and Flynn finished three lengths ahead in 15 minutes 30 seconds.
Urica New York July 5 A brass cannon fired by several youths at Stalin's place in Fultonville exploded prematurely. William Van Voast was killed instantly and Charles Maxwell, badly injured, died shortly after.

In Willimantic Connecticut a man about 35 known as James Kinney or John Patterson was fatally struck by a train at Mansfield. In Newburyport Massachusetts Frank Lovely a Haverhill shoe finisher was killed by an engine on the Salisbury Beach line while lying on the track. In Al- tans Vermont freight train crews found the badly mutilated remains of a man near North Georgia station, believed killed by a night train.
BarnGor Maine July 5 The first Ber num's Circus train from Ellsworth broke a coupling near Reed's pond. The forward section snapped, the rear crashed into it. Que Shaughnessy of Woonsocket Rhode Island had a broken leg and W C Matthews of Washington DC was badly injured. One horse died and four cars were smashed.
Pittsfield Mass July 5 George H Dunbar superintendent of the Pittsfield Coal Gas Co. is found shot and robbed on Water street near East street and the gas works. The autopsy shows a blow and a distant shot from above, with a missing wallet and $300 to $400 in his possession. A $500 reward plus $500 from the gas company seeks the killer. no suspect yet. Dunbar, 49, leaves a widow and three children.
In the eighteenth ward, Cleveland rolling mill workers held an orderly meeting and appointed a 12 member committee to present grievances to the managers. Managers were to be approached tomorrow, with fears of serious trouble if no agreement is reached.

The ceremony was postponed to the afternoon due to a New York commissioner delayed by a railway wreck. A second postponement followed as officials cited the wreck again. Crowds accused the organizer of a trick to collect admission fees and he promised to marry the couple the next day.
A Mexican Central Railway northbound train in charge of Conductor 8 QO Lesser and Engineer Desang struck and killed a Mexican sheep herder between Bustamante and Diaz. On arrival at Santa Rosalia the engineer was jailed in Chihuahua. Several American engineers and conductors are in Mexican jails over similar unavoidable accidents, risking international complications.
Cincinnati July 5 One Bengal tiger named Dickie at the city zoo underwent a dangerous claw removal. Directors and Dr Zipperlein oversaw the operation in a reinforced inner cage with six men pulling ropes while the animal was restrained. The claw was finally excised with a knife and pincers, the beast subdued, and the claw taken as a relic by Director Harper.
Despatch reports eleven people at a park picnic poisoned by canned meat from a lunch stand. Meat packed in bead cases caused illness. ten white and one black. All are now out of danger.
A July 4 explosion at Albany near Capitol Hill injures score of the crowd, with six boys ages 9 to 15 seriously hurt and several others treated for burns and cuts. A list of drowning incidents reported July 5 across Worcester Providence Poughkeepsie Lawrence Taunton and nearby towns. Victims include 14 year old Patrick Ryan in Worcester 7 year old Alibert Rudolph in Wanskuck 22 year old Patrick McNamara in Merrimac river and a 4 year old son of Oscar Lynn in Taunton. Two young ladies Minnie Kelly and Frederika Gilbert of Brooklyn were drowned at Clinton Point near Poughkeepsie and bodies recovered.

George H. Heustis of 804 Washington street, who earlier tried to kill himself by cutting his throat, was found wandering on Eustis street at 7:15 AM Sunday by Patrolman Quinlan. He reopened the wound with a finger, inflicted minor cuts, and was deemed insane and sent to the city hospital.

A Brunswick despatch reports Frank Gallaier stole a horse harness and wagon from William Muir and some money from his roommate Friday night before decamping. Orville Wibbard drowned at Stevens pond in Lawrence Saturday. resuscitation failed. Ambrose S. Fessenden’s wife, a Boston and Maine brakeman’s wife from Portland, found dead in bed with suspected chloroform overdose. The New England musical festival at Weirs New Hampshire closed Saturday with large crowds and concerts by Blaisdell's orchestra Temple quartette and a chorus.
