Akron Disaster Ends a Historic Airship Era

The Akron airship disaster off Brigantine Beach claimed Calvin Vaniman and Walter Gest, with others including Fred Elmer, George Bourrillion, and Vaniman’s brother among the dead or missing. Rescue efforts by 100 boats and lifesavers followed as witnesses watched the balloon collapse after launching from the Inlet hangar. Mrs. Vaniman, in shock, witnessed the tragedy and later suffered fainting spells. Theories blame gas expansion, fire, or a rope entangling a propeller for the fatal rupture.
