Glenn L Martin and Charley Hamilton nearly collided in midair at Squan yesterday as both racers closed in neck and neck. Martin dipped low to cut time at pylons, while Hamilton rose from below, and neither saw the other until within three feet. The close call ended without collision.
Connie Mack and the Philadelphia Athletics began their World Series bid at Shibe Park but were overwhelmed by Jake Stahl and the New England Red Sox. Jack Coombs struggled as Boston won the opener 7 to 2.
Governor Wilson wrote a direct, firm reply to Mr Bryan after Baltimore managers tried a hedged draft. Wilson tore up the dodgy draft and, with Joe, rewrote a clear response. Boston reports the quietest Fourth of July night in years with only minor incidents and minimal police activity.

A handful of Dorchester youths startled the city by flinging a dummy into a middle of a busy street, disrupting traffic and alarming motorists. The incident underscores wider concerns about street safety and juvenile mischief in the area.
New York July 3 fire raged through the Pathological Institute a hospital and library on Ward's Island sending over 400 women patients to safety. The three story brick building burned completely destroying a valuable medical library and instruments. Authorities did not estimate the loss tonight while 4000 other patients were kept calm by assurances the fire was slight.
Benjamin White of Allston was drowned and Dennis Doyle of Park Road Weston was knocked unconscious when their canoe capsized on the Charles River at Auburndale shortly before 2 this morning.
Two young men spending a night on the river near the Waby Wa Wa boathouse capsized their canoe in thick weeds. Although expert canoeists and swimmers, they became entangled and cried for help. Police officers William Long and John Dwyer arrived but could not save White and rescued Doyle.

Albert Roth, a strike-breaking conductor, was arrested at the Lenox Street Elevated car barns for carrying a blackjack. Harry Solen, who reported being assaulted, said Roth struck while Solen pressed for another transfer, prompting the strike leaders to cite substantiated police complaints.

An explosion in the locomotive cab injures engineer Harry Austin and fireman J H Boston as the train neared Boston. Both men suffer serious burns and are hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital. Sparks from the firebox caused a grass fire, requiring a fire department response. A second locomotive and crew were dispatched from Boston and the freight train resumed after about two hours delay.
Philadelphia and New York split games in a National League doubleheader while Boston and Brooklyn faced losses in the American League. Standings show Cleveland over Detroit with Chicago at St. Louis rained out and Washington, New York also noted.

Great Barrington July 3. Mrs Patrick Sullivan forty and Mrs Josephine Gregory thirty five sisters drowned in a mill pond by the Housatonic River while diving to save Mrs Sullivan's young son. Catharine Foley another sister jumped in and was rescued with difficulty.
Three women, all skilled swimmers, jumped from a row boat to rescue neighborhood children in bathing. Two women sank and died. a manned rescue saved the boy and Mrs Foley. The water was 30 feet deep and bodies were recovered after more than an hour. Mrs Sullivan leaves a husband and five children. Mrs Gregory was a widow with three children.
