Bryan supporters appear in firm control of the Massachusetts delegation with Coughlin viewed as likely to win a seat on the national committee. The scene centers on party loyalties and emerging leadership as votes unfold.
North Adams reports indicate ex Mayor John W. Coughlin of Fall River is virtually chosen as the Massachusetts member of the national committee. Dane F. Doherty trails, while Charley Ashley of New Bedford leads the Coughlin faction with Mayor John T. Coughlin as first assistant. The final decision awaits the statewide delegation in Chicago.
After the delegation train departed North station, extensive gumshoe work began to spotlight Humphrey O Sullivan. He soon emerged from the shadow as investigators pressed forward.

A serious fire in downtown Woburn began in the Simonds building and, by 2 o clock, spread to adjacent structures along Main Street. Loss from the Simonds site is about 35 000 dollars, with total damage near 40 000 as water shortages hampered firefighting efforts.
Cooperstown, N Y July 3 The condition of Bishop Potter was reported as very low at 12 50 this morning None of the family retired last night and all were at the bedside or nearby. At 2 15 this morning he was apparently very near death.
Robert Burns aged 62 died in his bed at Hampton House early today from heart failure believed triggered by the intense heat. The death was recorded as the result of natural causes connected to heat stress.
The July 2 1901 temperature in Boston reached 90 degrees the hottest in 21 years except for 1901 when high reached above. Humidity at 2 pm 51.5 percent and relative humidity 75 percent. Cincinnati hit 92 the hottest city nationwide with Montgomery Birmingham Baltimore and Washington also hot. Eastport Maine recorded the day's low of 56 while Nantucket stood at 76.
