Legation Slayings Reported Amid Chinese Capital Tension

Chaos grips Beijing as legation servants are killed and fears rise that only a few foreigners remain. English and American visitors are counted around 150, while legation guards tally about 500.

Baron von Ketteler Murdered in Peking Crisis

Shanghai reports the German minister at Pekin Baron von Ketteler was killed by native troops on June 18. As of June 23 three legations England France Germany remained undestroyed. The American consul cited Yung Lu telegraphing June 26 that the other ministers were safe that morning but the situation was desperate and protection from the Empress and himself was no longer assured.

German Minister Ketteler Killed in Shanghai Attacks

Official despatches from Shanghai dated July 1 confirm the June 18 killing of Baron Von Ketteler the German minister. He was attacked on Legation street by Chinese troops and Boxers, dragged from his horse and slain. His body was hacked and the German legation and six other buildings burned.

Hoboken Fire Kills Hundreds and Damages Ships

A blazed Hoboken dock conflagration causes an estimated 300 deaths with about 200 crew perishing. Visitors and workers were among the casualties as three steamers were total losses and property damage ranges from 10 to 20 million dollars. Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse escaped with minor harm. Some Boston Christian Endeavorers reportedly lost en route to the Saale for London.
