President A Lawrence Lowell spoke at Memorial Hall to Harvard alumni outlining a future university where scholars share honors with athletes and students cooperate with faculty on student life issues. He called the task heavy but pledged to pursue it with support from instructors and alumni.
President Lowell gave his first alumni address at Harvard, speaking haltingly yet earnestly. He praised scholarship as a source of honor and highlighted the student council’s influence, eliciting wide admiration and a strong Harvard cheer from the gathering. Alumni from many quarters attended.
A jury has reached a verdict in a trial featuring a defendant connected to today’s case. Details regarding the charge, the nature of the quittal, and any sentencing steps were not immediately disclosed.

Referee W J Meikleham, patrol by revenue cutters and a crowd expected near 50 000.
New London readers anticipate a colossal Harvard versus Yale eight-oared race along the Thames near the railroad bridge and sand pits. Crowds line the banks and decks as 16 oarsmen from each crew push to the finish in about 25 minutes amid cheering trains, ship canons, and watch bells.
William J. Hartnett of East Boston, under indictment for tibery in the Crocker Will affair, appeared at the Superior Criminal Court with District Attorney Hill. He was arraigned quietly, pleaded guilty, and was allowed to depart. Rumors say he may act as a State witness before the grand jury.
In New York on June 30 the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad known as the McAdoo Tubes will discontinue women’s cars immediately. President McAdoo announced the decision after limited success since their March 31 installation.
In a record breaking coast run from Central American waters to San Francisco the battleship South Dakota delivered C Taggart of Beaumont Texas for urgent medical care. Taggart suffers tuberculous kidney disease and the ship's surgeon says the case requires unusual attention.
Mrs Apne CG Greenleaf of 36 Hudson Street Somerville was shaken and bruised in a runaway accident on Highland Avenue Somerville late yesterday afternoon.
In a four day celebration for the silver jubilee of Archbishop William H. O Connell and his safe return from abroad a large Sister reception was held in Mechanics Building last night. The Mechnics building auditorium was crowded with about 12000 attendees. The prelate appeared deeply moved by the tribute and was welcomed by city and state leaders including the Mayor and Governor.
A Boston Catholic observance culminated with Archbishop O Connell’s reception at Mechanics Hall. A pontifical high mass at the Cathedral in the morning drew clergy and lay leaders from across the diocese. Guards of 500 and police of 250 managed crowds as 100 ushers assisted, with the archbishop entering through a sword‑crossed line of Knights of Columbus and other Catholic groups.
New York customs officers detained the steamer Ethelword at the South Brooklyn waterfront on suspicion of preparing a filibustering expedition against Santo Domingo. The order came from Assistant Secretary McHarge in Washington and was carried out by Port of New York Collector William Loeb. Washington reports say a British ship was linked to similar plans by Jose St. Pierre Giordanian and General Juan Jiminez.
