Investigation into the Knickerbocker Theatre collapse that killed more than 100 people began in Washington DC today. Officials from multiple district agencies opened inquiries with possible Senate and House reviews anticipated. The disaster highlighted extensive ruin captured in today’s pictorial section.
A man barricades himself inside a building on Lagrange Street after a clash with patrolmen. He fires from drawn revolvers and riot guns, forces a one hour standoff, and is captured after officers breach the building and he seeks refuge behind locked doors.
John Reardon faced profanity and loitering charges in Central Court. The clerk asked guilty or not, the judge threatened a $1 fine for swearing, and Reardon prepared payment while a court officer warned him to remove his hat. He argued that loitering and arrest for swearing were unjust.

Ludlow, Vermont resident John Sheehan, with partner Arthur Connors, killed a wild bobcat with his bare hands on a mountain trail. Sheehan seized the animal by the throat as it attacked, suffering deep claw wounds but finishing the kill. Hunters say it is the first documented bobcat attack on a man in the area.
Paris January 80 Premier Poincare today received Irish government delegates John MacNeill Michael MacWhite Michael and Des mond Fitzgerald representing the Irish government in a formal audience at the French capital.
The Post led Boston papers with the first graphic photographs of the Washington motion picture theatre disaster. One hundred five people died and over 130 were injured, with the image set published a day before rivals. Continued on Page S-Third Co.
Miss Anna N Chambers age 23 of Somerville was arrested last night in connection with embezzlements from Grocers Baking Company Roxbury. Police allege losses could total hundreds of dollars over a seven to nine month period.
The technical charge alleges larceny of 17 dollars with Miss Chambers caught in the act. Police describe how sales slips were altered to steal cash by shifting amounts to unsold bread. An audit triggered by a changed office force revealed mismatches between cash received and goods sold. Theodore H. Best and Leon Murray identified the fraud. a warrant was issued. Miss Chambers, cashier at Grocers Baking Co. at 65 Hast Cottage St Roxbury, was bailed $500 for arraignment.
In Cincinnati on January 3 Judge Charles W. Hoffman heard testimony in the divorce of John Marcus, a 47 year old tailor, and Mary A. Marcus, 24. A. F. Feinberg testified that during Billy Sunday revival period, Sunday’s son and Mrs Marcus were at a top hotel. Another witness said Mrs Marcus and the evangelist’s son were ejected from the hotel. Marcus was granted the decree.
The Boston Elevated Railway cannot cut the 10 cent car fare until 4,039,774.34 is repaid to 14 contributing municipalities for the first year’s deficit. Chairman James F Jackson said a 5 cent fare is unlikely unless the Legislature changes law governing the L road.
Governor Cox signed the bill placing Boston deputy assessors under civil service despite protests from Mayor-elect Curley. A conference with Public Works Commissioner John N. Cole and Metropolitan District Commission Chairman James A. Bailey was planned with the new mayor and city council after Curley’s inauguration.
An East Dedham ambulance refused to move until its crew used moonshine found beside an unconscious man. The driver poured the ether-tainted hooch into the engine, reviving the vehicle to speed the patient to the city hospital where doctors confirmed the man had merely been drinking and the liquor contained ether.
Today in 1917 Germany warns the United States it will pursue ruthless naval warfare, repudiating past promises. A 1916 raid on the English coast by Zeppelins is noted, and a year ago Cork elected Denml O Callaghan as mayor. President Wilson refused to pardon E V Debs.

John D. Rockefeller increases his educational philanthropy with a $45,000,000 gift to the General Education Board, bringing his total contributions to about $221,000,000. The funds will join the board’s general fund and support medical education and related research efforts.
In a 1.15 am condo siege at 17 Wheeler Street South End a 62 year old Renzi Murray wounded Patrolman Daniel J McShane then hid in the two story house for over an hour firing from windows. He shot William H Jackson injuring his right arm and dropping a 5 month old baby. Both victims listed as in dangerous condition.
