A prisoner faces charges of forging the name of Earle Lane of 14 Brighton Street Charlestown to a $242 check on Whitman Savings Bank. Police say the accused used Lane's bank book, which showed a $600 balance, reducing it to $7.86 after the forgery. Inspector Farrell arrested him after a risky pursuit.
Vice President McNamara of the Brotherhood of Railroad Firemen returned to Bangor after visiting Millinocket where he warned mill workers against a sympathy strike. Railroad conductors and trainmen planned to vote on a wage increase of about 40 percent, with decisions likely to trigger a broader stoppage if rejected. Directors met in Bangor seeking to halt the threat.
