Fire Commissioner Parker pledges to run the department on a military basis eliminating politics. He proposes no fires to focus on departmental business and saving city funds, plus a thorough review of issues like the one day off in five to create the most efficient fire fighting organization.
Brigadier General Samuel D. Parker will assume the fire commissioner role, replacing Benjamin W. Wells who was removed by Mayor Hibbard. Parker plans a businesslike, nonpolitical department operated on a military basis to improve response and efficiency, with fewer afterhours fires and less media presence at blazes.
District Attorney Jerome argues that Harry Thaw is not insane and never has been, saying the eccentricities of boyhood could have been corrected and that Thaw’s actions stem from intense hatred toward White, not insanity. The courtroom remains crowded as many favor a verdict far from acquittal.
The district attorney argued Thaw acted with premeditation citing two to three years of acts showing deadly hate toward White. He also suggested justice might be served with a lesser degree of criminal responsibility than first degree murder.
Fred F. F. Osborne a 28 year old sanatorium inmate was arrested for the larceny of diamonds watches and jewelry worth 891 from fellow inmate Frank Wallace Richards. Police say Osborne buried the treasure in Gray's Field then moved it to Franklin Field dug it up again and left it with a pawnbroker before being taken into custody at Roxbury yesterday.
A bold and timed robbery occurred in Brookline with evidence pointing to experienced thieves. Patrolman Evans found the Brooks residence at 4 Babcock Street intact at 8 pm but noted a pried window at 10 pm. The robbers took selectively valuable silverware, leaving rest behind.
At 4 am a gang of five yeggs in an auto blew open the Weston post office safe in A W Cotting’s grocery building and escaped with money and valuables. Alarm sounded by tenant Mrs Ross. Chief P J M Auliffe formed a heavily armed posse and pursued the fleeing vehicle as surrounding towns joined the manhunt.
New York Jan 30 King s Court the colonial residence opposite George J Gould s Georgian Court Lakewood was destroyed tonight by a fire starting in the elevator shaft likely due to faulty wiring. The house built by Gould five years ago cost about 500000 and was said to be a gift to his son Kingdon.
Eight men in the smoking car of an elevated train halted the system for a period at 11:35 last night. The train stopped just after leaving the subway station at Pleasant street, while all other passengers transferred at Dover street.
Eight men refused to alight at a different stop claiming they paid for Dudley Street on the L line. The smoker car was moved aside by another motor coach, creating a 30 minute tie up from 11:35 p m to 12:05 a m and leaving thousands inconvenienced, the Elevated railroad reported.

In Nantucket on January 30, the Coskata lifesaving crew battled fierce surf and a overturned lifeboat to rescue a woman and her year old child from a brigantine breaking up on the shoals. The rescue is hailed as one of the most heroic feats in life saving service history.
