A wireless message reports the U S battleship fleet passed Point Dungeness and entered the Straits of Magellan at 2 PM. It will anchor for the night in Possession Bay and reach Punta Arenas by noon tomorrow February 1. Possession Bay lies about 20 miles west of Point Dungeness and near the narrows entrance.
In New York on February 1 a calm but tense discussion circulated that the Thaw jury stands eight to four against a verdict. Judge Dowling closed the jury room after 11 PM and adjourned until 10:30 AM tomorrow to allow time for a possible agreement.
Speaker John N. Cole of the Massachusetts House faces indictment by the Essex county grand jury on a charge that he asked for fare reductions from a railroad in violation of legislative conduct laws. The case stems from a long running feud with political opponents and may split the Republican machine according to Cole’s comments.
Roosevelt condemns Standard Oil and allied combinations saying their vast fortunes rest on a morality that would justify every form of criminality by labor unions and all violence corruption and fraud from murder to ballot box stuffing in politics.
