The liner Canopic carrying Cardinal O Connell has been delayed by heavy weather and is 700 miles east of Boston Light at 1 am. Arrival is now expected Wednesday instead of Tuesday, delaying the planned reception program to Wednesday.
Boston Elevated announces prizes for verses on caution in street cars aimed at students in city schools. Two first prizes go to Florence J. Barnes and Anna Louise McCarthy, with several other awards and a list of fourth prize winners. Two hundred $2.50 prizes will be mailed tomorrow January 30.
Williamstown era school notices feature Elizabeth Roche and Helen Murphy urging children at Charlestown and St Rose High Schools to look and listen before crossing streets. They warn of trolleys and autos, urging care, patience, and safety in daily travel.

B F Pearson KC proprietor of the Halifax Chronicle is critically ill with kidney disease in Halifax Nova Scotia. He has been gravely ill for two months and doctors fear he may not survive the night. Pearson was a notable Canadian industrial organizer and helped form the Dominion Coal Company in 1893 with Henry M Whitney of Boston.
Philadelphia reports the National Institute of Arts and Letters has announced 40 immortals of America among the greatest living American writers. Notables include Abbott Lawrence Lowell Harvard president Arthur Twining Hadley Yale president Charles Francis Adams Lincoln Mass Henry Adams Boston and others from Boston Cambridge New Haven and Dublin N H.
Harrison S. Morris vice president announces the list of the immortals for the National Institute of Arts and Letters, highlighting distinguished artists and writers recognized today.
Six strike breakers arriving at East Boston docks were attacked by a large mob on Orleans street and Maverick square. The assailants forced them to draw revolvers and fire into the air. Police rescued the workers as the mob grew to about 3000. Frank Gomez and Anton Monteiro were charged with carrying loaded pistols. others were detained and later released after midnight.
Athol reports a blaze destroying the Second Unitarian Church with an estimated loss of 30000 dollars. Unity Hall adjacent to the church suffered total destruction and its contents including 300 dollars in table silver owned by the Athol Women's Club.
Fire started midway in the one story wooden church with a steeple, built in 1880. Local pastor Rev. William D. Wilkie, from Whitman two years ago, led morning services before the noon Sunday school. Firemen, hampered by extreme cold, could not save the building, which lay in ruins four hours after the sexton locked up at 2:30. The church was insured for 10,000 dollars.
The Rev Joseph Crooker pastor of the Roslindale Unitarian Church tendered his resignation to take effect Feb 29 at morning service. He has led the church for several years and is known in Unitarian circles across New England. His wife Florence Crocker is also an ordained minister and currently in missionary work in the West.
Joseph J. Etter organizer of the Industrial Workers of the World declares tomorrow may bring upheaval. He threatens possible deadly violence if strike breakers arrive and hints I W W workers could demolish machinery after gaining access to plants.
Charles Y. Harvey a sculptor formerly of Great Barrington Mass believed a plaster group would not bring fame killed himself in Bronx Park today by cutting his throat with a razor. His body was found in a park thicket with two razors nearby. He had a studio on upper Broadway since moving from Paris a year ago.
John J. Harvey of Great Barrington was identified by S. E. Fry as the missing sculptor. Harvey had not resided with his brother for 25 years and was 43 years old when last seen. He was linked to the Robert Gould Shaw memorial in Boston and the Sherman monument in New York. The brother noted Harvey left to study under Augustus St Gaudens and did not return for extended periods. Fry said Harvey had been despondent recently and a watch was kept on him.
In Lawrence on January 28 inflammatory speeches by I W W leaders and labor union representatives inflamed the 20 000 striking workers causing renewed tensions and raising concern over possible further actions.
Dudley M. Holman secretary to Governor Foss arrived in Lawrence and will stay over tomorrow to monitor strike developments. He declined to comment on the strike tonight.
