In a Washington DC exchange dated January 2 1912 a letter challenges a newspaper's Harvey-Watterson report alleging concealed facts. The author denounces the public claim as lacking warrant and demands a formal reply, with continuation noted on Page 14 Fourth Column.
The mayor dismissed Fire Commissioner Daly for failure to fully perform duties. Colonel Charles H. Cole, mayor of the First Corps of Cadets and former police board chair, was chosen to replace Daly, pending Civil Service approval. Lieutenant-Colonel John H. Dunn took charge as acting head and responded to a two alarm fire shortly after.
The removal ends a clash between the Mayor and Commissioner Daly that has simmered since last spring. Daly’s dismissal was anticipated in political circles for months, with speculation the Mayor sought a successor only if a convincing cause emerged to justify the action.
