Cars Plunge Into a Creek Near Carmel Disaster
A Monon passenger train from Chicago to Indianapolis wrecked near Carmel Indiana at 7 30 am after crossing Wilkerson Creek trestle. Coaches plunged into the creek, a fire destroyed the ladies coach, and several passengers and crew were killed or badly injured. Rescue efforts saved some but many perished or were fatally burned amid collapsed track and wreckage. The cause cited was a damaged curve on the track with insufficient ballast and a temporary shim to the outside of the curve. The dead include Mrs Nellie Evpank Mrs DeS Onneam and two Sheridan children. injured include George Munger and numerous other crew and passengers. The scene prompted rapid aid from nearby residents and an improvised medical response.
