The campaign aims for 200000 in ten days to complete equip and endow Elizabeths Hospital. The current pledge reached 36511 dollars at 1 pm yesterday and a. thermometer project on 451 Washington street is expected to pass 40000 by 12:30 today as funds rise rapidly.
Thousands flocked to Washington Street to watch a giant thermometer track progress in the Boston 10-Day Campaign for New St Elizabeths Hospital. By 1 PM the tally reached 86511 with teams forming for evening meetings despite poor weather and high hopes for the fundraising effort.
The City Council ordered a new City Planning Board to coordinate city development and approved a plan for a large municipal lodging house to replace the Wayfarers Lodge. The measures follow a personal appeal by the Mayor and will be signed today.
The city planning board issue, required by an ordinance, saw the Mayor defeat the Mayor-elect. Miss Fannie Crane died from burns after an exploding kerosene lamp. Her sister Miss Susan Crane, bedridden and dependent, rushed to help but sustained injuries. Neighbors and Cornelius Shea aided, extinguishing the flames and rushing them to City Hospital where Fannie was not expected to survive.
Worcester police joined a statewide search for Eleanor Arlin missing from Brookline. A nervous woman matching the description was seen, with several leads tying her to Worcester locations including a candy store and an employment agency.
Police say two pairs of brothers fought with knives at the corner of Salem and Prince streets. Michael Cappucci, 19, of 5 Sheafe Street, North End, died after being wounded in the abdomen. His brother Joseph had two knife wounds in the back. Pasquale Bonnepane and Michael Bonnepane won the fight. Pasquale is jailed. The other suspect fled to Lynn as officers pursue him. The clash stemmed from an old card quarrel.
Police plan to press link August Kaufman scholar adventurer safe blower to the murder of Policeman Heath during an October 9 post office raid in Salisbury. He is held on nine counts with $10,000 bonds and resides in Charles Street jail on bail default. Authorities cite multiple breaks across the South and say Kaufman has confessed to several.
Es Fi B Albin T Richards a lawyer formerly of Harvard University was on the New Haven payroll at 50 dollars per day, receiving 2123 dollars total. He is the brother in law of Bruce Wyman of Harvard Law School who testified he earned 10000 dollars yearly from New Haven. Richards got the job through Ferdinand A Wyman, Bruce Wyman’s father, who also worked for New Haven at 50 dollars a day.
The Episcopalian Pension Commission proposed a nationwide plan for retired clergy and missionaries with annuities from 600 to 2500 dollars and widows and orphans from 100 to 1250 dollars. Bishop William Lawrence chaired the commission and, with secretary Monell Sayre, outlined the plan at the Episcopalian Club of Massachusetts dinner at Copley Plaza.
