Fred A. Marriott of Boston narrowly escaped death when his Stanley built steam racer struck a hardened sand ridge at two miles a minute near Ormond Daytona Beach. The car leaped, rolled over, and splintered. Marriott was pinned in the hood but steam escaped when the boiler fuse blew, likely saving him.
Marriott was carried to the club house after a hasty injuries check. Officials found no broken bones though the scalp face and arms were gashed and torn. Rumors of eye loss were denied and he is believed out of danger now though internal injuries may develop.
An 11-year-old Roxbury girl was gagged whipped and assaulted on Columbia Road near Quincy Street Roxbury last evening. Police withhold her name and she lies critically ill at home with grave fears for her life.
In New York on January 25 fifty one talesmen were questioned as the juror pool for Harry K. Thaw's trial against Stanford White. Seven jurors have now been chosen, with five more still to fill the 12 man panel. The process shows growing difficulty in securing competent volunteers as many are excused or rejected during screening.

In a Tombs jail message to reporters Harry K. Thaw says he has confidence in the jurors already chosen and is more hopeful than ever to be speedily acquitted. He declares he is thoroughly satisfied with the jury selection so far.
James Bryce announced plan to create a national university for Ireland in Dublin. A new Dublin college would be free from theological tests with crown appointments at first and later mixed governance. Royal University of Dublin would be dissolved to form part of the national system including Belfast and Ork colleges.
Leo Stevens and Captain Lovelace conducted the first winter balloon ascent in the country from Pittsfield. Flying the Eagle, they rose to 3500 feet amid a 14 degree field temp and 25 below zero at altitude. A carrier pigeon was released but died from the cold. They landed safely near the Government mill after turning into warmer air.
The Provincetown Pilgrim memorial design, shown in yesterday's Post exclusive photos, has earned approval from both state and national governments. Minor changes may occur, but the published design is essentially final.
A man lay dying and another fled after a late night pistol duel on Portland Street near Causeway. Fortunata Amanza, 41, of 82 Nashua Street, was wounded in the left side and intestines at the Relief station. The other shooter escaped after firing from close range and lawmen briefed an all city and neighboring towns alert.
